Evolution Aqua Pure Aquarium + Accelerator

I also saw that thread and she overstocked the tank immediately which is why she had the problems. I also think she used it incorrectly, if you read it, it looks like she added the accelerator/balls for 7 days, then left for 7 days, then fully stocked the tank - recipe for disaster! This stuff doesn't claim to fully cycle your tank, but to help accelerate that cycle and from what I am seeing so far it is working.

Readings as follows:

Day 6 04/11
Temp 78C
Ammonia 0.7
Nitrate 0.7
Nitrate 15

Day 7 05/11 This was the last day of adding accelerator and the balls
Temp 77C
Ammonia 0.7
Nitrite 0.7
Nitrate 15

Now this is where it gets interesting. Decided we would go with it and add a few small fish and monitor closely, obviously be prepared for large water changes etc because after all it claims that you can start to add fish from day 7.

So Day 8 06/11
Temp 78
Ammonia 0.6
Nitrite 0.7
Nitrate 20

Added 6 small Tetra's. No sign of distress, all happily swimming. Fed them and they have all fed. No gasping or fast breathing as you would expect from a totally uncycled tank. At this point, if this stuff doesn't work I was expecting to see a spike in the morning....

Day 9 Temp 77C
Ammonia 0.6
Nitrite 0.7
Nitrate 55

So no spike, only a rise in Nitrates, so did 20% water change and 1 hour later readings are

Ammonia 0.1
Nitrite 0.4
Nitrate 10

Will update again soon. All thoughts welcome.

looking good so far :good:

So far it looks like the stuff is not doing much to get that tank ready for fish in 7 days. Something is going on but it is not a cycle from what I can tell. Before you added anything to the tank it was ready for fish in terms of water quality, but we really want the water quality to still be good a few days after the fish are added. That is why we bother doing a cycle. Even after your water change on day 9 your water would be deadly to most fish.

very much the impression i get.
i don't know, people always looking for short cuts, sign of the times i guess.

as with all these things. the maker offers not a single shred of evidence to back up their claims. and honestly, do you really think, if these things worked, we would find out in a post on a forum such as this. no, it would be plasterd all over the aquatic press, backed up by their evidence. but neither has happened, so we are left with only one conclusion... Another "snake Oil" con. just seem to have a lot of, either, lazy or gullible(possibly both) people around just now.

Just one observation on day 9 test, I wouldn`t have thought a 20% water change would lower nitrates from 55ppm to 10ppm

Hello all

I have a very well established tank with five fish in. I recently went to buy more fish but got the water tested first. They said there is a small amount of ammonia in the tank and sold me the aqua pure aquarium and accelerator, however I am a little unsure about using it. The ammonia levels in your testing seem to have gone up which concerns me if I already have ammonia. When I asked about usingit with fish in the tank already she very vaguely said "yeah, it's ok" and didn't fill me with confidence! I am concerned about harming the fish I have which are all quite happy!
Any advice is appreciated.

It's quite possible to get a false positive on ammonia tests if not done correctly. This would be my first concideration in this case. Secondly if this isn't a false positive I would say thats it's more likely to either be a mini cycle caused by incorrect maintenance like not dechlorinating water or your tank is under filtered or filter is blocked and the filter is unable to process the ammonia.

What is your maintenance regime.
How long has tank been setup.

Also i wouldn't use that product in my tanks with fish in.
