Donating Mature Media

Mattsissons, how long have you been running you tank and have your fish had any diseases?

My tank has been running for well over 9 months now with no problems (touch wood), the fish are all happy and lively and the water is crystal clear :good:

Have you got a good LFS? You could try talking to them and asking if you can pinch some.

The bacteria won't die on the way home as long as the media doesn't dry out.

I have yet to find a LFS which doesn't reply to my question with, "We do sell some "bacteria" in a bottle!" Everywhere I ask I just get told to purchase some of the safestart or other similar products.

can we update the media list?

i have pm'ed and still not beed added to the list.

This is a good idea, I looked on there when I first started and couldnt contact anyone. I have now cycled my tank and have added extra filter pads (roughly 5cm x 10cm) and would be willing to donate

If one were to take this filter media, is it actually viable to just drop it in your tank on the bottom until your tank starts cycling and then donate the same pads to someone else? Or is it likely the colony will diminish?

LFS make money from products and they don't make money if they help you out for free. Plus, a lot of employees don't really get the whole nitrogen cycle thing anyway.

Don't leave media in the bottom of the tank - it needs the high oxygen and high water flow of a filter. I did that once - dropped a massive chunk of mature media into the tank and killed all the bacteria by starving it of oxygen. Plsu, the water needs to flow through the media to be cleaned.

Mattsissons

Did you know that it's not possible to send you a message to your mailbox through your profile?

I am very grateful for your willingness to help out! Shall I send you some sort of container (for the sponge) and money for postage? Or maybe my husband can arrange for it to be picked up by TNT, I have to ask him, he's not in at the moment.
Hopefully speek to you soon!

Upsy D.

I guess ive just not posted enough for PMs

dont worry about any money or container, ill sort that out, im just glad to help :good:

i know what it feels like when you cant get a tank set up, so in for a penny B-)

If anyone on the Wirral/Liverpool area is able to donate some mature media it would be greatly appreciated. My girlfriend and I have had a very bad experience so far and currently fishless cycling but wouldn't mind a kickstart. My friend has an odd style filter which cutting up the media would totally ruin his filter. Of course I will be willing to drive at a suitable time if such a donor can be located within a reasonable distance.

Thanks,

You should be good to go in the PM world now Mattsissons. I PMed Tolak and he set your profile to allow it.

Thanks,

I've just changed around some media so if I don't get a spike in the next few days, I'll see about sending you some filter floss. I'm not that local but I'm sure the floss will be fine for a couple of days. Can't vouch for how mature it is as I only added it to the tank a month or so ago but it's better than nothing.

It's not a permanent media type and will probably want to be replaced once your tank is cycled and your filter has its own bacterial colony.

That'd be fantastic if you could do that, I could pay for shipping over paypal if you wanted, or at least I think you can do that... :/

If I can cover it with the cost of a stamp I will. Will work out what sort of packing I'm going to need - don't want it dying on you!

I'm pretty sure it will need to be packaged haha, a stamp is only a viable option when its paper thin :(

I guess one of those chinese takeaway tubs + water would do fine and of course duct tape to stop seepage, someone said in another topic about putting a food source in the water for it to decompose through transit.
