I have some trumpet snails in one of my tanks, and I think that one of them hasn't moved very far. If it is dead, I should pull it out immediately, right? What it the best way to tell if one is dead? Also, what happens if one dies while IN the substrate; how will I ever find it? Should I just keep an eye on ammonia?

Okay i'm only guessing here but if one snail dies it won't make that much difference to ammonia the body will rot and fertilise your plants- or be eaten by the other mini me snails and the shell will float to the surface i know i've seen shells floating in my tank now and again!

you can tell if a snail is alive by taking it out and smelling it. a dead snail smells BAD, and if its alive it should smell like a healthy tank...kinda like an earthy smell.
