Is it necessary to cycle a coldwater tank like a tropical one? Or can I just have the water in there for a few days with some live plants, water treatment and filters running prior to introducing fish?

If necessary/recommended what exactly does the cycling procedure involve?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Yes it is nesscary to cycle a coldwater tank in the same way as you would in a tropical tank. It will allow the bacteria colonies to establish themselves and form a efficent nitrogen cycle in the tank, breaking down the harmful nitrates etc. I wouldn't use live plants in your set-up unless you plan on removing the under gravel filter. I think there is a pinned topic in Beginners Questions on cycling. :)
