Cloudy Water, Can Anyone Offer Any Advice?

Dont apologise, it's baffling stuff.

Yes keep doing at least a 20% waterchange, but as much as you can manage would be better (you can't over do waterchanges) because you're going to need to do them regardless of the results from p @ h, so save yourself the trip. The readings may have been 0 today but even by tomorrow morning that will likely change.

What I suggest is that when you get your kit, start a new thread, call it 50 litre Cycling Log or similar, and keep it updated with daily readings and details of waterchanges done, day by day. This makes it easier to keep track for people to help.

okay thanks. I can't thank you enough for your help and support - you and everyone else. I think I'll aim for 10-20% every other day if that sounds acceptable to you. That way I'm not stretching myself too much and wearing myself out but also helping that filter to cycle.

Thanks again :)

update: I've got up this morning to find my male platy is at the top of the water with his nose stuck out. Without my testing kit I can only guess that the nitrite has come up. I'm about to do at least 50% water change and get it tested tomorrow (can't face p@H today, not feeling so great) and hope that testing kit arrives on Tuesday!

I see what you all mean now about needing your own test kit!
