After deciding the flow from the standard outlet of the fluval 406 (external filter) was too intense, I investigated here, other options. I bought a spray bar fitting and have just set it up. I took the gamble that the one for the 305 / 405 would fit, as I could get this cheaper off the auction web site than a 406 one direct from fluval themselves and indeed it does!
Unfortunate that you have to pay extra for the one marked as 406!!!

Can't you get an adaptor for the output pipe that will let you adjust the flow? I thought you could.

I didn't realise that! Do I now need to buy something else ;-)
The spray bar gives a gentler more diffuse flow now - still a reasonable movement, but I think it seems better - the little tetras would sometimes get in the flow - swimming up river and didn't seem to realise that they could get out of it! Unless that was their idea of fun!

If you're happy, stick with what you've got. I just thought you could get like a nozzle you could adjust the flow on to turn it up or down.

cant you adjust the flow by the flow control valve found near where you attach the two pipe to the filter looks like a leaver i know you could on the 405?

Yes you can adjust the flow rate on the aquastop valve that comes with the filter

Thanks folks, I'll look into that!
By reducing the flow rate do you reduce the efficiency of the filter and / or oxygenation of the water surface?
