Can Anyone Give Me A Clue Please?

I got some new fish for my birthday yesterday and received an unexpected freebie - when I put them in the tank there was also a tiny catfish of some kind! Its too small at about 1 1/2cm to photograph so I will describe it as best I can and if anyone can suggest what it might be I can then google it and try to find out.

Its a mottled grey and beige colour, has 2 small barbles , is a longish shape and has like a sailfin on the top of its body. It spends a lot of time hoovering around the tank like my red tailed shark does.

Suggestions anyone please?

At a very rough guess it could be a young hi-fin/ long fin peppered corydoras, if you can get a picture it will help a lot.

Thanks for the reply. Its not a cory , I have several corys also a peppered one and its definately not one - the body is elongated and streamlined.

you can try putting it in a tupperware for the photos - you will be able to get in closer

If it's (more or less) triangular shaped looking top down..... maybe you have a young BN of some kind??

More than likely a Synodontis or Featherfin Catfish... if so... you probably dont want it in your tank...

How about something from the Hara or Akysis genera (the plural of genus... apparently!)?

Ok these are terrible photos as hes so small and fast but any ideas? He has 2 very short barbels either side of his mouth.

yep chinese algea eater i would take it back asap they can be quite aggressive as they get bigger

Im gutted! I was so pleased id gotton a freebie on my birthday. I dont think theres any way im going to catch it to return it - its so tiny and fast and its in my 250L tank!!

Use a empty, clean pop bottle. Put an algae wafer inside and sink it to the bottom. When (if) the fish swims into the bottle, pull the bottle out. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to tie a piece of thread to the neck of the bottle so you can lift the bottle without putting your hands in the water. Good luck.
