Can Anybody Identify This Fish?

sounds like a swordtail to me

was the male similar in shape to this?

Yes he was, although that sword part of his tail was much less developed but I think he was still a juvenile.

When i first saw the colouration the first thing that lept in my head was "dyed fish" to me it seems unnaural for some reason.
It looks like a swordtail too me though :good:

id go for either a calico swordtail or mollie or a cross breed of them both just for the size of it and these platy's/mollies/swordtales are sexually diamorphic (they can change sex ) it seems to have the structure of a swordtail but the abdoman part is simular to a mollie

The reference to blushing will be about the splash of red around the gills. If I must guess, which it seems that I must, I would guess it is a molly. The body shape is too long to be a platy and a bit short and compact to be a swordtail. The hint about sex changes on demand would lead me down the swordtail path because I have often heard equally silly statements about swordtails by " knowledgeable salesmen" but it looks too robust for a sword. The slight upturn of the mouth screams molly at me but it is probably my day to be wrong completely. I really like the look of her, whatever she may be.

To me it looks like a platy cross breed.

The front of it looks very much like a panda platy (I have 2 in my tank)

Here is a pic of panda platy:

That does look like the closest match in coloration so far!

I'm guessing it's some kind of hybrid then by the sounds of things probably swordtail/platy combo? I'm going to track down the shop she came from at the weekend and see if they can solve the mystery once and for all but it seems doubtful that they'll have a replacement male there :(
