Perhaps this is a question for the oddball section, but does anyone know if I could keep female betta fish and a peacock eel in the same tank provided it's a 55 or 65 gallon with plenty of backup tanks?

no. the eel might eat the betta or stress it

They should be fine together as long as there are places for the eel to hide during the day. You should also have smooth substrate or sand and not course gravel because the eels bury themselves in the substrate.

The eels grow to about a foot long but have very small mouths and won't eat Bettas. They prefer small insect larvae and worms.

Sweet! Thanks, I'll look more into it.
