At What Point Do You Ask For Help

Going along with Helen G's self diagnosis

maybe something like one of those stupid/funny online quizzes to see which type of faerie you are? do you know what i mean?

It would ask, i don't know, 20-30 questions pertaining to fish health and environ; each will have a number of multiple choice answers to choose from. then it would do some computer-y stuff and tell you the closest match(s) to the symptoms you chose and give you the most likely to work remedy. Or even better would be yes or no questions.

it wouldn't be fool proof but it might help.

those quizzes are easy enough to do and i have some friends who might be able to do it well enough to make it worth it. just an idea

I agree about trying to cure your fish and doing it as early as possible BUT

I am not going to spend £20 to say cure a neon tetra which is about 50-75p, If I have the meds here then sure Ill treat them but if its not going to affect the rest of my fish and its going to cost me 200% or more of what the fish is worth I probally wont cure it....

Sorry If that sounds mean but its truth...

I sell dime to nickel body size angels to shops for $1 to $1.50 each. If I have a problem with a smaller angel, I will spend money on long distance phone calls, tall dollars on meds shipped overnight & such. I will without question spend many times over what this small fish is worth in an attempt to cure it.

Why?

Well, if in the future, a breeder comes down with the same condition, I will know exactly what to do, or pretty much exactly, to cure it. Younger fish are generally more fragile than adults, if it works on a younger fish, odds are it will work as well or better on a more mature fish.

If I cure the breeder, the next spawn from that fish covers the cost put out for the juvie and the breeder.

I have also gained knowledge, that can be passed along. It sure would be rough keeping fish if folks didn't try going beyond what the fish is worth to find out what is behind the ailment.

Agreed Tolak, just reading over this last couple pages and even if your fish costs you $0.70 then you should try to save the fish and even if you fail then atleast you know what to do if it happens again later on.

This makes me think back to the feeding live fish thread I saw a while ago, if your not going to save a fishes life by spending money then what is the real difference between feeding a live fish to a predator?

Let's not hijack this thread in regards to the live fish question please... Oh and I do agree that emmsy is hot, but I wouldn't use that word... I find it to be slightly degrading, I'd say that she's... well beautiful and stunning looking :p

In the short time I have been on this forum, there is one thing that has become aparrent. People are asking for help far too late into the fish's condition. Then one of two things happen. Advice is given for a remedy, and the advice is either heeded, or ignored cos the aquarist thinks its too far gone anyway. I think there is a thing in peoples' minds that if they post the "Help my fish is in trouble" post too early, we are going to say " Oh mate, what are you talking about? that fish is fine!". So they wait until the condition looks bad enough to post on here, and then sometimes it is too late.
Then, when you mention the V word (Vet), people shudder at the cost of it, and are not willing to spend any money on the fish, because they have left the condition go too far.
As most of you will know by now, I am a practising Vet, and I will help anyone who asks for my help for sure, as will most people on here, but they are just words on a computer screen. To help your fish, you might have to go down the LFS and spend £20 on some meds, or got to the vet and spend £20 on meds, which some people are not willing to do cos they can't be bothered. When you decide to keep fish, it is the same commitment as buying a dog or a cat, and just because Fish are in plentiful supply, doesn't mean they should have less rights to treatment than a cat or dog.

Discuss and Debate......
unfortunately its not just spending £xxx amount on meds......a consultation with a vet bumps the price up too!!!!
