Ammo Lock Question.....

I just got done with my 6th big water change in 3 days. I managed to get my ammonia down from above 8 to about 1 ppm. I still can't believe it was that high. I plan doing 2 tomorrow and hopefully that gets it down even further.

3 more questions:

1. I know water changed are good to get rid of ammonia but if I'm adding treated tap water back into the tank doesn't that go up into the filter and kill some of the good bacteria still?

2. After every water change I have been adding aquarium salt back into the tank. Should I keep doing that or is the salt really not needed. I only have a guppy, black phantom tetra, and an otocinclus in the tank right now until the water is better.

3. Should I continue with these big water changes until the ammonia is way down and then just do little ones after that or what?
