Alternative To Dechlorinator

I do water changes often without any dechlorinator and I don't have any problems with it, I think someone on here did a 85% water change with out and dechlorinator

My old bosses at the fish warehouse often do up to 20% changes without dechlorinating, and that's with chloramines in the water. They used to call me a worrywort because I wouldn't do it. Anything over 20% they treat.

Its perfectly possible to do water changes without dechlor.

It is however only really recommended for tanks that have been running for loooong time. In Ludwigs case, he probably has media thats been passed around filters for upwards of 5-10 years, and can cope with such water changes. A filter thats newly cycled probably couldnt handle such abuse.

All of the above said, i still wouldnt NOT use dechlor, why risk it?

Hello all.

I make my own dechlorinator. I use a sodium thiosulphate solution. 500g bought from ebay (approx £5) is enough to treat 145000 litres of water (at 1ppm chlorine).

If you have chloramines in your water, then a very small amount of ammonia is released by the chemical reaction. This is quickly dealt with by normal bacterial action in the filter.
I have been using it in all of my tanks for a couple of years now with no problems whatsoever.

A 25% water change with no dechlorinator poses no real issues providing your tank has been running for at least 6 months.

I'd recommend buying some Seachem Prime, it's highly concentrated and should last you a long time! 5 ml will treat 200 litres. Never seen it in shops though, so might be an idea to buy a bottle of whatever you normally use tomorrow then order some Prime online for your next water change.

Was your tank cycled before putting fish in? You're going to need to watch your water perameters at least for the next few days.

I know but since I have a fair amount of tanks, Its seems to run out quick, even though, I get a bottle every week.
Who said fish were cheap

what product and size of bottle are you using? My 500ml of Seachem Prime has lasted me over 2yrs!

Bodge: thiosulphate is the main active ingredient in Prime and many other dechlorinators. I should hope it would work just fine. Using currency exchange rates, my last purchase of 1/2 litre of Prime only cost me about 7 UK pounds including shipping. For me that was a many years supply of Prime for my 26 running tanks. At a single drop to treat a gallon of water, a half litre lasts a good long time.
