What about something like that? I'm looking for a way to save me walking through my living room with buckets of treated water all the time as its just a matter of time before I trip and chuck 5 gallons all over the floor

I'm already going to make a super long siphon that reaches the kerb drain outside my house to elimanate that part of the bucket routine...

Hmmz... So its ok to add untreated water to the tank and add the dechlorinator directly to the tank?

I think it's fine as long as your not changing the the whole volume of the tank or near that, it makes life much easier and the chlorine and chloramine from the tap gets greatly diluted in the tank water, so it barely if at all affects the fish for the short period of time it's in there.

You need to add the right amount of dechlorinator for the volume whole tank though - so something like seachem prime or pond dechlorinator would be work out much, much cheaper.

Thats what I'm thinking, but lots of people seem to swear by pythons (wouldnt work for me as the tank is pretty much the same level as my sink etc) and that appears to be mean you need to add the dechlor to the tank rather than the water going in....

yep you can add it as the water is going in or straight after. Quite alot of people dont even add it so i would say its fine :good:

the tank dont have to be lower/higher to fill it back up, aslong as its not to much higher the pressure from the tap will push the water into the tank, if its causing a problem while emptying it you could easily just carry of doing it out into the drain. (so really you just need a hose from the tap to the tank)

I run a 10m hosepipe to my outside drain too. A quick suck to start the siphon, and it works a charm (you don't suck any water, just a small amount of air - takes about 10 secons before the water starts).

Then I move the end to the tap, and fill. Sorted!

i dont use dechlorinator

do regular smaller water changes and there really isnt any need.

the chlorine would take longer to affect the fish than it would for you to use a python and add dechlor straight to the tank after :good:

Yes it is. I, as well as many others have been doing it this way for a long time.

Get your mouth off that hose. It is not sanitary. If you get 3 or 4 feet of hose underwater in the tank, then put your thumb over the end, then pull a couple of feet out of the tank before you take your thumb off, the siphon will start on its own and you can use your mouth the whole time for talking, eating, drinking or other things a mouth is meant to do. If you are using a gravel vac it is even easier. There is a small flapper valve right where the hose attaches to the rigid part. If you put the whole rigid plastic thing under water and move it back and forth quickly, the flapper will open and close as the water goes toward the open end of the hose. When enough water is into that part of the hose, the siphon will start on its own. Again, your mouth can be doing anything but sucking on that unsanitary tube.
