Hi, need some advise re filters please.
I inherited a 60L tank recently with 3 comet goldfish and the filter is odd to me. It is a Juwel compact box with sponges and wool that sticks to the inside glass with the heater in the box, the pump is not in the box it is separate in the tank but is submerged inside the tank. Is this ok? should the pump not be inside the filer box? Thanks

Hi, the air pump, the filter just comprises of wool and sponge there is no motor or pump in it at all

Does the filter look like this (wait a few seconds for it to load)

If it does, it should have a pump that sits inside the filter, the diagrams in that link will show you.

Hmm I'm still struggling to understand this....

The air pump should be outside of the tank with a tube going into the tank to an airstone.

The filter has an area for the heater, the powerhead pulls water in from the top and the sides[to move it past the heater]
Draws it through the wool/sponges to the bottom then out through the pipe into the tank, you can get a venturi adapter for the outlet to make it blow bubbles,

Hope this helps :good:

Hi, the link above is the exact one i have, sorry if its not called a pump, there is no powerhead in the filter to pull the water in.
I can only guess it has broken at some point so there is another powerhead but is external of the filter box and sits on its own in the tank.
Hope this helps i will try and take a picture x

You can buy a new motor housing for jewels at your lfs I think they are about 25 to 30 quid though.

That is a pretty standard looking internal filter. Remove the top part and look inside. I bet it has an impeller inside like mine does. It does not need an air pump to work properly.

Hi, it just has sponges inside, there is no impeller. I have ordered a new powerhead.
Thanks to everyone for all your help x
