trapdoor’s are live bearers, so they only have 1-2 babies at a time, but do reproduce in an aquarium

Thanks. 1-2 at a times seems like it would be easy to manage the population. I've been thinking about a few snails just to help with algae control but I've wanted to stay away from Nerites and their eggs all over everything.
those new to the hobby blueberry, and I think orange river snails. are both live bearers as well…

I would guess the species of Viviparus, are probably all live bearers, as both of these are Viviparus

well, we will still get some 90 degree days, before winter arrives, but a few cold rainy days had me thinking about buttoning up things… I’m installing full shades over the screens , to block wind and dirt from being blown in… my 1st 2 are here today ( some assembly required ), as these two are 10 feet wide each… this is a big screened patio, it’s going to take 7 of them in various widths to fully protect it from the wind blown elements… I’ve bought bungee material by the 100 foot roll, as I will run several widths across the shades, when in they’re down position, as they are 8 feet high ( thinking big sail in the wind )
a couple days in the upper 50’s and rainy, made sure the heaters worked, I’ve been thinking about the rigid foam insulation box, making it so it just slides over the top, and not attaching anywhere, with the shades as wind protection, the screened porch should stay “many” degrees warmer than the outdoor temperature, with the wind blocked enough to protect the insulated cover… if anything is needed, a bag of sand, should be sufficient to keep it in place… the overhead viewing light, will not be turned on during the winter, and the timed back ground lighting ( strips of LED lights attached to the back of the tank, and will be inside the insulated cover, and will still provide tank lighting, even during a blizzard ), and yes, we do have a generator if the need should arise…
I’ll be hanging the 1st 2 of the 10 foot shades today, assembling them on the patio, and installing them outside the screen, between rain storms today…
all 3 of the snails are doing a great job on the algae at the top of the glass…

1st shade up, now I can measure better for the one next to this..
acrobatic snails…
here is one of the larger trapdoor snails… somehow it was able to transfer from the front glass to one of the American Frogbit plants… there was stuff to eat on these plants when they came last week, but I’m surprised it successfully transferred to the floating plant…

Do you have some way to monitor the temperature of this aquarium from inside the house? So you can stay warm inside and not have to go outside and lift the box off and check it.
the heater controls, read the tank temperature… the brackets for mounting them allow them to be inserted facing either way… I stuck them on the back frame of the tank, when I 1st set it up, but I’m going to move them to the window behind the tank, making the tank smoother, and more easy to lift the foam insulation cover off and on… I have them facing the tank for 3 seasons, but will flip them around towards the house, so they are readable from the window… with the foundation height of the house, the tank, being in front of the window, only blocks 6 inches or so of the very bottom, so once I move the sticky heater brackets to the bottom of the window, that will work out perfectly…

it’s all a new challenge… it’s possible with tank right in front of the window and filters percolating, it’s possible the tank will make the window frost up during the coldest of weather???

several rainbow shiners, with highly electric colors today…
I’m thinking this tank is going to be pretty interesting as more fish finally get here, and the tank matures… even with just the “minnows” the rosy fatheads, and the shiners are not supposed to interbreed, but at this point, both school together without prejudice… that may change drastically next spring… I find even the snails interesting, even more so if I witness so babies… even the plants are all interesting, I don’t have any of these in any other tanks yet…

unseasonably cold for several days… heaters will be running, high in the upper 50’s degrees today and tomorrow
I think I have a baby snail… with 3, they could have been pregnant when they came… it is a possibility it could be a pest snail, that came in the plants, but it doesn’t look like my typical bladder snails… it’s pretty tiny 1/8 inch, so it’s hard to clearly photograph… the adults seem at home here already, so I’ll have to keep an eye on this one…
