I have zero experience with an auto top off.  I do plan on putting an auto top off on my new system, though.  Sounds like its just a headache??

I absolutely love my auto top off system.. and i would say they are even more important on a smaller system.  They can be a little bit of work for sure, like anything else when you first set it up, but once you get it running and have your regularly scheduled maintenance steps figured out well worth the cost and hassle..

I can see them being essential on the smaller system where a little bit of evaporation could create larger swings in salinity.  Whereas on my current set up if I lose a gallon a day on 155 gallons, not too bad.  I still plan on using one one on my next project just to try and keep everything as stable as possible.

I do love my auto top up, It was my fault I filled the barrel up to much and it leached back into the sump.
 
Now that I've got stuff marked out etc it should be fine. Looking forward to getting my new tank next week.
