Lost the BN pleco over the weekend.   Wondering if he was eating enough, or if it was just a delay in the acclimation process.
 
 
Either way, all the other fishies are doing tremendously and the mollies have become ever more active (which could be why the pleco wasn't getting enough to eat).
 
 
 
In other news, my wife has given me the go-ahead to start a betta sorority tank for my son's first fish tank.  He will be taking on some of the major roles of this tank, under my supervision.  He'll get to do some water changes, etc.

0o0o0o, ahhhh.... the first fish tank     I honestly cannot wait until we have the space we need so I can put a fish tank in the boys' room. It will have dinosaurs and a volcano hehe...

Yes, that is correct.  But mollys are hardy enough to handle the softness for a brief period.  They will be rehomed to another tank at the school in a short time.  They were added to combat the BBA, but aren't doing an effective job - honestly, there's just too much algae and not enough mollys.  Which is why I am looking into CO2.
 
 
On the CO2 news front, a colleague of mine has an old CO2 tank that he is going to be giving me, so I'd just need to get it refilled and then add the rest of the CO2 equipment to get the CO2 levels corrected in the tank to eliminate the BBA for good.  (Once that is dealt with, the black mollys will be rehomed to the new home.)

I'm not scared of it... its costly (compared to letting the fish create the CO2) and its more complicated in terms of getting the light and ferts just right. 
 
We'll see how it all goes.

I really wish you'd been able to solve the mystery of the dying fish. But I'm glad that overall your tank project is going well - it looks great with the dark substrate and the bright neons

My students like it, but they are ridiculous.  "You should get huge fish, maybe a shark."    Fools.  They fail to appreciate the beauty of a large shoal of small fish.  I suppose that's to be expected in 14 year olds.

Well when I was 14 I though Monster fish were ugly. I preferred the silent and serene beauty of shoals. But now I love monstas but cant keep them anymore. The recent flood cracked my tank to pieces

Derph- Sorry to hear that. I know a lot of your fellow country people are going through a lot due to recent events.

One day, you will get another tank. Not high on your list of priorities at the moment, family and friends and your home comes first naturally.
