So yesterday my obsession got the best of me and I got a beautiful veil tail lavender betta for a deal i couldnt pass up.. $1.45 at the LPS,

anyway.. I put my new buddy (Mystic) in a 1 gal tank and he has been VERY VERY shy (compared to my crowntail betta who is the same size tank) he just sort of sits at the bottom of the tank and is very skittish. I couldnt get him to eat pellets but he did eat some blood worms but only a little bit. Will he come out of this phase because he is new? Could something be wrong with him? Or is this just his personality?

His tank is in a high traffic area in my home (the bar in my kitchen), we originally had my crowntail who is a very social boy in this area, but since he is my baby (lol) we moved him to our room and put the new fish in this spot.

ADVICE PLEASE!!

*please no rudeness*

It can take a bit for them to settle in and start eating.

As for anything being wrong, I'm not sure. What are the water parameters? Do you have a heater? What is the temperature?

Also have you seen THIS?

checked water and it is all good, water temp is 72*F, i have seen the care sheet.. probably would do me some good to brush up every once in awhile though. He has come to the top now and is hanging out near the top so hopefully this is a sign he is getting used to things

Well imagine that temperature is not helping. They should be kept at 78-82*F.
That is in the caresheet, as well as a recommended minimum tank size of 2.5g. In a tank your size you want to be doing 100% every 2 days.

Do you have a heater? :) I hope he perks up.

I do 100% water changes every 2 days, i dont have a heater but my house always stays 75* - 80* F (VERY cold outside! lol) I will do a 50% change right now to warm the water up and see how he does after that!

Just a question, would a heater melt a 1gal acrylic tank? and do they even make heaters for this size?

No it won't melt the tank and yes they do make very small tank heaters :)

It sounds like he is just stressed from the trip. Hallow floors carry sounds further and can really irritate the fish. If in a few days he's still shy I'd try moving him. If you don't have many plants in maybe try adding a plant he can hid in/under.

I would upgrade him to a larger setup so you can heat it more evenly and raise that temp up. He is pretty cold right now. Once he gets warmer you will see an increase in activity and appetite.
