i looked at the uninteruptable power supplies, but i never could find one that i could afford that would keep the tanks running for more than a few minutes at a time. they seem to be like the emergency lights at work, they help ya get your stuff and get out of the building but they go off after about 30 minutes.
i bought the bigger generator because i was planning on running my chest freezers and all of the aquarium filters and heaters when we moved to Alabama. i didn't want to risk losing food or fish. and in AL they have almost daily power outages, so i knew i would be using it as backup for the whole house there.
you can buy a much smaller generator on ebay, probably even locally, for $200 or less. i started out looking at 300 - 600 watt generators in the $2-300 range. even 100 watts would keep a single aquarium and possibly a fridge on during an outage (but i never understood keeping a fridge running when it's freezing outside).
