Latest, trauma, one of my silver sharks seems as if it can't shut it's mouth properly.......Do you think that it's ate soemthing and it's stuck?? Ive ocasionaly being given fishies freeze dried river shrimp, hard and crunchy. The heads are that hard I have to pick them out. Could it be a bit of this? If something is stuck, well it's basicly buggered isn't it? :/

Swimming around with mouth open yes can mean he has something lodged, wrap him in a clean cloth soaked in tank water that might help him cough it up, and sterlise a pair of tweezers before incase you need to use them, has he dislocated his jaw by any chance.

Not the writer of this information below.

Open Mouth (cannot close mouth)- This is usually when fish have a rock or something foreign stuck in their mouths. If you are very gentle you can push it forward and out of their mouth through an accessway under the gill cover. The fish of course would do better if under some anesthesia. Oil of cloves can be recommended too. The other reasons for open mouth could be a sore or ulcer located on the roof of the mouth. This is usually treated by swabbing the area with hydrogen peroxide (be careful not to get any in the gills) and an injection of Baytril. More information on injections available at http://www.koivet.com. top

Thanx for that, however I don't think I could do that well not right now. If the fish shows any sign's of deterion I will try it but no I couldn't handle doing it

It's not as bad as you think, i have to remove my fancy goldfish from the tank then place her and wrap her in the wet cloth and cut her tail as it grows to long, that's why you wrap them up to stop them jumping, and to help keep the slimecoat wet, anyway it's up to you, good luck.

Why do you cut your goldfishs tail when it grows too long :/

Surely that can't be good for it.

I have had several goldfish in the past with long tails but never felt the need to cut them.

Emma :-(

As she has always had a swimbladder problem which i control on a good diet, and when her tail is abit shorter she tends to stay upright more, nearly had her two years, so it dosn't harm her, she is very tame lets me hold her in the tank.
