Wholesale Fish Chemicals?

Hi there, this is just a quick post really to determine the cheapest place YOU, my fellow fish keeping frinds purchase your chemicals for your tanks, and the quantity you purchase them in.

I for one am sick of gettinh 500ml bottles of stress coat where if you are having a crisis in the tank and you are depleting your stocks quickly your paying a small fortune for these chemicals. Does no where have like a litre bottle of these fish chemicals? Im Asking today what chemicals do you use for the following and how much you pay, and from where. Lets use thise forum post to help others find chealer deals on fish keeping chemicals and essentials.

None, water changes in small amounts won't kill the filter bacteria. Even in large amounts, the risk is overstated. We've had several good threads on this that convinced me.

None, I take my pH as it is. And I wouldn't use chemicals to change it if I wanted to. RO unit maybe. Blackwater or peat if I wanted to do it naturally.

None, salt has almost no place in a freshwater aquarium. The fish developed in freshwater, their bodies are not designed to handle salt.

None, most stress reducers are advertised with pseudoscientific buzzwords that really don't have much meaning. Or made with substances that don't have any effect on waterlife. Like aloe vera. Aloe is great if you have a burn and need to help keep the tissue moist to soothe and help heal it, but the once thing waterlife don't need help with is keeping their tissues moist! hence, I don't think that there is any need for "stress reducers" at all, if you are taking good care of your tank.

I haven't had much need for these. I find that if you quarantine and keep up with the water changes, there isn't much need. I haven't had a disease in any show tank in many years now, since when I first started. I have used Maracyn for one bacterial infection in my quarantine tank. I bought the small bottle because it was just for a q-tank with small volume. I've never had to treat for a fungal infection so I don't have an answer for that one.

The one medication that I do have a fair amount if is anti-worm. Praziquantel. The local LFS fish seem to come in with gill fluke infestations fairly often, so I always give my q-tank a large dose of it when I get new fish.

Can't get much cheaper than "none" for most of these.

I use pond dechlor - it's better value for money, and buy it from ebay. I've not followed the arguments for and against but am happy paying a tenner every few months and know I'm covered.

I don't mess with pH - I firmly believe that a stable pH is much more important than a pH is that is optimised for that fish.

I bought some aquarium salt recently on the theory I probably should have some after several years fish keeping, but have only used it once.

I don't use stress reducers, I've seen no compelling argument to suggest they actually do anything.

In terms of pills and potions, I buy stuff as and when I need it and have built up a collection off the top of my head of Melafix, Myxazin, IP Anti White spot, IP anti internal bacteria and a couple of other bits. I've bought them at various times over the years and have never needed to top them up yet, though I'm nearly out of Melafix. There are a couple of potions I intend to pick up just in case when I get paid, but have managed alright without them for several years.

API Stress Coat - I get it from Ebay. I only use it after introducing new fish

I did use Nutrafin cycle. But only because I got it free. Figured it won't harm.

I could add almost nothing to BigNose's post. Unlike him, I use Prime as a water conditioner and I do have some salt on hand. The salt is strictly for ich treatments which are sometimes needed with new fish. The water conditioner is so cheap that I see no point in not using it. I buy it by the half litre on line and it lasts many years even though I run 26 tanks as of now. It does make me comfortable doing a huge water change if I ever experience water quality problems like happens sometimes right after a fish auction. Yes, I do sometimes buy fish and then set up a new tank for them.
