who quarentines there freshwater fish before they put them in there main tank??

do you think it should always be done???

if you do how long do you quarentine them for??

i learnt the hard way so all my fish go into quarentine now for anything up to a month :good: its not worth the risk and the hard work of big water changes and chucking med into a big tank

I do unless they are fish bought from other hobbyist as these are always healthy. If its from a store or ordered in then It is quarantined for 2 weeks minimum.

i know i should but i dont and i have whitespot in my tank now :D

nearlly all gone now though :D

After adding an African Butterfly and Bush Fish tomorrow to the Rio 240, with the Pearl Danios expected to leave QT within the next week all being well, I will be using the Korrall 60 as a precautionary measure for the fish that follow, especially the 6 Humphead Glassfish (rather rare and rather to pricey to match at 75 squids).

Fish from a known source, such as a local breeder who's setup I'm familiar with will get a 2-3 week quar. Fish from an unknown source, such as an auction or shipped in get a 4-6 week quar.

I should, but I don't always and it has come back to bite me in the butt. Had a tank get ICH in February. Got the problem solved pretty easily, but still no fun for me and the fish!

If I have enough tanks I QT new fish from places like Walmart and PETCO...ALWAYS. But if I don't have a tank available sometimes I put them straight with the others, but NEVER EVER from walmart! I got my BN catfish from walmart and it gave everyone ICH. Couldn't actually see signs of the ICH on him...he is albino. I even QT my betta I got from walmart even though she was in a cup. But the ones from PETCO are usually in great condition despite living in a cup for a while so they get added right into their tank normally.

I should, but I don't generally.

If I have a spare tank set up and buy new fish, then I'll use it as a QT, but otherwise, I don't set up a new tank, or keep a tank dedicated for QT purposes.

I have actually found a that a smallish, minimally furnished QT tank, with no settled fish is actually much more stressful on new fish than putting them straight into a lovely big tank, with loads of cover and loads of other confident fish ... it's logical really.

Anytime I've used a QT tank, the fish have been really quite stressed for quite a while. If I put them in my big tank instead, then they almost always settle very, very quickly.
One severum I bought looked like it might even kill itself with stress in my QT tank. I was so concerned that I put him into my main tank, and he settled almost instantly.

We all know that various diseased like Ich are frequently triggered by stress, so I think the idea of stressing new fish as little as possible has a lot of merit.

I also am very picky where I buy new fish. Some shops I simply will not buy from if I don't rate their QT or fish husbandry very highly. The other shops, I always spend quite a lot of time watching the whole tank of any fish that I am potentially going to buy. If there are any signs of sickness whatsoever in the tank then I steer clear.
I've had a pretty good record, so I'll stick with my current policy.

I almost always put lfs or shipped fish in a quarantine tank and try to keep them there for three weeks or more. Sometimes I just let them stay there and set up a new tank when I bring home some more fish. Like Tolak, if I get them from an auction at the fish club and know the breeder to be reliable, I often put them into any tank that has enough space for them. :)

No I don't. It is purely a space issue for me, my appartment simply isn't big enough for two tanks to be running.

i think of a qt tank as an ideal luxury. of course, its a great idea to have one, but most people don't have the space... i dont, anyway.

I never have, but should do, considering i lost 60 Mbuna from one infected one, and white spot killed my adult Red Severum from a infected Oscar i bought :(

....Live and learn i guess...

i don't but i do have a small 2.5 gallon just in case something goes wrong... I just float bag for 20 mins or so. then in they go. I see no need to quarantine as long as you keep a good eye on them. If you are never home, then quarantine them. But its really the keepers technique. :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: :good: Tee Hee
