Which Filter?

I have a 200l tank and I am running thishttp://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/fish/filters_pumps/canister_filters/eheim/114867

dont touch fluval externals with a 10 foot pole they are useless poorly made and unreliable . eheims are more expensive but for good reason they are the best its as simple as that and you dont have to break the bank either. ebay aquarists classifieds etc. id rather nuy a 2nd hand eheim than a new fluval any day. cant comment on tetratec filters never used them but if they are anything like the tetratec airpumps id steer clear .

type fluval vs eheim into google and read the review on discus forum for yourself . eheims last forever fact fluvals not nearly the same build quality fact.

a mate of mine has 2 eheims on his marine tank that have been running for over 20 years problem free.
and i only use eheim eqipment external internal and air pump .

your filter is arguably the single most important piece of equipment you will buy so its just not worth cutting corners to save money imo.

you want the very best and that is eheim

having said that its not all cut and dry. eg fluval internals seem to be much better than fluval externals and altho eheim are the best bar none avoid the eheim ecco as they are nowhere near up to the usual standard expected.

another point worth consideration is that whilst most filters are tested empty eheims are tested fully loaded with media. all filters will claim pump output x amount lof litres per hour. this is all well and good under those test conditions the actual output you get is usualy considerably less. eheims will be much closer to the actual claimed performance as thes tests are done fully loaded with media etc.

Here we go again with the Fluval bashing.

While some people make their point politely, there are always some that resort to slurs against them.

I've used Fluval externals over the last year, and never had a single problem. As have many, many others.

not a bashing at all just simple statement of fact . also if you read properly youd see i said fluval internal;s were good and actually warned against certain eheims. and didnt comment on tetratec filters due to not ever having had any experience with them .

seems to e that youre a tad over sensitive

tetratec also make very good filters, and a few years down the line when hey have a rep, they will be eheims number 1 competitor.

avoid eheim pro thermos too!

the fluval 04 and 05 range is crap, they are renowned for leaking i think only 2 members on here actually say theyre good

but the FX5's are brill!

got a 405 have no problems with it yet.

Also there been quite a lot of leaking threads for tetra Tech filters on quite a few forums popping up and its a quite a new product. Saying that I got a 405 and ex700 and like them both lol

Go for the FX5 if you can aford heard nothing but glowing reports about it

the fx5 while easily the best fluval available just isnt on a par. comes with the bare minimum of hose cheaply made much less room for bio-media . agreed it does an excellent job of filtering your tank but very prone to problems. read several reports of fx5s breaking down with 1 reviewer having them on 6 of his tanks and no less than 5 developed issues.

with filters like the fx5 yes i agree fluval are making huge steps in the right direction but needd to improve build quality and reliability crack those 2 and i would happily have an fx5 on my tank . until then i will stick with my eheim.
1 more point eheims power consumption is considerably less making it cheaper to run. worth considering as after all a filter is running 24/7 365

You said "dont touch fluval externals with a 10 foot pole they are useless poorly made and unreliable"

If that's not Fluval-bashing, I don't know what is?

My experience with Fluval Externals, and the experience of every fishkeeper I personally know is that they are perfectly fine. I don't know a single person who's had a problem with one. Ever.

When your talking double the price fr the Ehiem, you'd expect them to be better built and more reliable. That's what the extra money is for.

Its all about VFM.

you cant go wrong with hagen products. if you dont have the money to spend on a canister, an aquaclear110 will be more then enough to do the job, and has nearly the same media space as a canister when properly filled

I'm soo confused people are suggesting all different ones Im still with the tetratec and liking the sound of aquaclears, could anyone give me a link to one that would be fine for my tank?

Lucy :D
