Well soon I am to get a 5 foot tank, I don't know all the dimensions but heres my question:

Would a internal or external filter be better? Also which brands do you recommend. I have never had an external and will be looking for advice on them such as setting them up, cleaning them etc.

Sorry I can't give you the full dimensions as I don't have the tank right now

The externals will filter a larger capacity therefore for a 5' tank you will proberbly need an external unless its about an inc deep lol

an eheim external

For a 5ft tank, your talking a good 75-100g so an external is what you will need, unless of course its a juwel and comes with the internal filter, which even then, I think you will still need to run an external on it too, depending on what your planning on stocking in it.

I would say either a Fluval FX5 or a tetratec EX2400 or two tetratec EX1200 one on each end.

You could go with an eheim but they are more expensive than the others.

To be honest, once the external is set up, they usually need little maintenance, except a swish around of the media once every 6 months or so, and I dont even do that, the only time I open up an external is if the flow seems to slow down.

to add to what minx said, if you go external the O ring will need lubing every couple of months to prevent it drying out and leaking, avoid fluval externals at all costs (except the FX5's). i would go with a tetratec or an eheim, both very cheap second hand, but ive read in a few places of TT's leaking a bit lately.
i would cram it full of ceramic media then a little mechanical filtration where the water enters. ditch the carbon!

TT's are fine mate, its only becuase TT produce any problems they have on their website or realse it so other know. where as eheim keep stum and just rely on their brand name to make sales

AVOID THE EHEIM ECCO SERIES.

if i were you i would be running 2 externals on the tank as one will not be enough.

eheim are well aware of there problems  look at the thermo one versions of the PRO.

avoid eheim ecco (not eheim) and eheim thermos

I want to go with the tetratec EX2400 MinxFishy mentioned.

"O ring will need lubing every couple of months " Truck what is lubing?

"full of ceramic media then a little mechanical filtration" Will it come with these medias?

Edit: Just looked them up, £150 !!!!!!!!!

Lubing is greasing, your dad will understand :good:

Yes they can be expensive but any decent external filter worth its salt is going to be over £100 unless you get second hand.

TT, Fluval all come media, some eheims do not and you have to buy it seperately.

What about a Tetratec EX1200 and my Fluval 4 + internal.

Would I have to cycle the tank again?!!!!
erm not sure really its dependant on the size, if you started of with what you have now stock wise in the tank and use the 4+ (which i pressume your using?)
add that to the new tank and add fish instantly then slowly build up your stock once the TT has been in for a month

Extrenal Aquaclears are great. PLENTY of room for bio-media, Can have a very strong current, cheap , indestructable, SUPER SUPER easy to clean, and well, CHEAP. I absolutely LOVE my Aquaclear.
