When Will People Learn......

I did subscribe to the fish will never outgrow their tank idea for many years as the goldfish i kept in bowls never got that big! Then i learn't about filtration and the growth inhibitors that can build up in the tank if the water isn't looked after properly.

So yes, i guess in an unfiltered tank, the fish should never outgrow it's home. That said it would probably die from the poor water conditions before it get's a chance to grow that much anyway!

Just thought i hope i dont get into trouble re-printing the chart from PFK

Who from, the forum or the magasine? The information is in everyone's interest, I would recommend getting a copy this month as the article is quite an eye opener!

sorry i was just messing...I answer to nobody......well perhaps me mam... :good:

Mess all you like!:)

I don't see any problems, you attributed the research to Dr Peter Burgess, as PFK have done, (Just looked at the article, vaguely remembered reading it when I bought the mag 2 wks ago). Its just highlighting the problem!!

I can hardly bear to look at the red tailed cats, I want one so bad when I see them, but I don't have the space for them either.

Seriously, about big fish outgrowing tanks....my old roommate once bought an oscar and housed it in a 20 gallon, with every intention of getting it a bigger tank later. Then her company downsized, she lost her job, had to take one that payed less, ran out of money, etc. and never had the money to upgrade the tank. Good intentions....sometimes things happen. The lfs store took the oscar back and that was that.

Mhunt being new and ignorant is the cause of the problem, not an excuse for it. Its just plain stupid to spend money on anything these days without atleast doing a little bit of research, in the past I could understand it but with the internet 15 minutes worth of research would tell you not to buy a pacu. People going out and buying salt water critters without research is deffinitely having atangable and negative effect on the environment, and it makes it alot harder for good hobiests to get the best fish.

I know it's no excuse, but until the retailers really become responsible, and stop stocking the fish in the first place, it's going to keep on happening. New fishkeepers will trust what someone says at the petshop, the same way people who are not technically savy trust what they're told at PC world  . I think the only retailer you can really trust is a pharmacist!

i think a lot of the blame does lie with retailers, for a lot of new fishkeepers they would consider that by going to the lfsand asking the employee's about what they want to keep they are doing some research. Although *we* may knowit not to be the case, I still think it's a reasonable assumption to think that the employee's of a fish store will know what they're talking about and have the best interests of the fish at heart.

And I seriously doubt if PFK would mind, your just helping to highlight the problem as they have done. Maybe it'd be nice to bring they're attention to the post, could help the problem if people saw this forum as a place to turn to for info or possible people to re-home to. OK so I know most of us wouldn't have room for a pacu or RTC, but there's shed loads of people on this forum with tanks big enough for things like common plecs etc that the big public aquarium's are never gonna want to take. Maybe if they directed people who asked to somewhere like here a couple of fish would end up with suitable homes.
