Last Tank Build: 40 Gallon Breeder With German Rams

my adult zebra lace angel hunts cardinal tetras... it leaves all the other small tetras alone... I started my last purchase of them with 8 jumbo's ( I started with a dozen normal size, and the angel just wouldn't leave them alone ) now after the jumbos, I'm down to one really big survivor... expensive fish food... I'll be moving that angel to my big tank, when I finally get around to setting it up, then will buy more cardinals... good luck with yours, but if they start disappearing one by one, you may have a culprit...

love the tank...

Yes, Angels do seem to have a particular taste for Cardinals and Neons.

40B are too small for adult male angelfishes but females stay quite a bit smaller (usually) and are more suitable for a 40B as well as less likely to eat a larger cardinal.

Well, Magnum Man, I can't believe it but I think you nailed it. I have had tons of angel fish over the years and tons of neons/cardinals, and have never had a problem with the angels eating ANY fish, much less cardinal tetras.

I went away for 2 days and all but one are GONE. Not dead (or not JUST dead)- GONE. They must have eaten them. The angels appear fat and happy, though, so ...expensive dinner...

The good news is that the hatchet fish are still there and seem to be doing well. I think they're too fast for those angels anyway...plus a little to big.

I'm still messing with the heaters- it's steady at about 81.3 or so now, need it to be a little higher, but it's getting there.

My rams ship tomorrow! Also, I ordered some pigmy cories- please tell me the angels don't eat those! :D

81.3 is too warm for pymy cory and if these are gbr rams 81.3 is fine for them but if you lower the temp for the pygmy the rams will shiver and catch cold.

While unlikely if a particularly large angelfishes decides to try to eat a pygmy cory (and yes they can get one in their mouth) the cory will almost certainly release its spikes causing both fishes to die. There are pictures on hte internet of such incidents if curious.

UPDATE:
Hello all- haven't updated this one in awhile. Tank is going pretty well- had some adventures- will try to provide brief update below.

- ICH- The German Blue Rams got Ich. I treated it as soon as I saw it and it went away, thank goodness. Don't know how they got it- maybe those angels from the club, but the angels didn't get it (at least that I could see) but anyway

- FALSELY ACCUSED- After further review, I don't think the angels ate those cardinal tetra....at least not while they were alive. Reason for my guess (it's a guess not positive):
  • I had a couple die before I went away
  • I've had fish die from Aqua-Huna before
  • One survived, and after much observation the angels NEVER pick at him- even when they laid eggs (see below)
  • because of that, I'm getting a few more to keep the one company... knock on wood.
- ANGEL WEDDING- the 2 angels I got from the club turned out to be male/female and they quickly paired up and laid eggs. They've done it twice. Eggs haven't lasted to the wiggler stage yet- doubt they will if my other pair are an example (I don't do anything to help- just let nature do it's thing), but fun to see them doing it and they get along great.

- FAST RAMS- my rams are already picking at each other- Dan's (at my request) sent me young ones- don't know exactly how young, but they're small. I saw at least one female with a pink belly and there are fights occurring, so I am setting up another tank to move a pair to, and will take a couple to the club if I need to.

- RAM TRAGEDY- one of my rams died, unfortunately. Not sure how it happened, I guess it could have been picked to death by a competitor or who knows what else. I gotta get that other tank going today

- PYGMY PARTY- the pygmy cories are doing great! I'm not a huge fan of cories (although I have others), but I wanted catfish that wouldn't hide all night and wouldn't be too big. Perfect setup with these guys and they are fun to watch.

-ALGAE - fighting some kind of hair algae- it's easy to brush it off with a toothbrush. Also some darker kind on leaves of the plants- easy to wipe off. I figure it's a new tank, so will take time to settle.

-PLANTS- Plants are doing ok- I have some water weed and wysteria floating, anubias and amazon sword planted- also a java fern. I'm not adding anything to help them at this point- I'm more concerned about clean water - I may do some testing to see what I might need to add- maybe some micro nutrients or some potassium, but I haven't tested anything but nitrate that is related to the plants at this point.

-SNAILS- I have a lot of leaves disintegrating, so got a few rabbit snails to see if they'll help with eating them. I dropped a piece of Rubble Zone in there to hopefully provide enough calcium. Not sure they'll live long, but hoping- I've seen at least one recently and he seems to be doing fine.

Current water condition:
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 10ppm (before water change)
Temp: @83F
TDS: 116

I've added leaves and alder cones to add tannins to the water. Leaves are disintegrating but hopefully snails will help

some more pics taken today
NOTE: Water is cloudy- changed water last night and stirred up the decaying leaves- then forgot to turn the intake valve on my filter before I went to bed. :(:eek: It's clearing up but should have cleared all night. I am bad about doing that with the Fluval FX filters. My wife keeps telling me to make a checklist.

Hey everyone- I bought 8 German Rams and I swear every one of them is female. That can't be true...maybe it can...I'm not sure. They're pretty young, so I'll wait a while to see how they develop. One died about 2 weeks after getting the tank, so I'm down to 7. I have 2 in another 10 gallon tank (both females, unfortunately). Eventually I think I'll need to auction some at the club, but wanted to make sure I had enough for 1 or 2 healthy pairs. I swear, I could be the only one to get 8 dadgum females LOL. Here's a video update.

Don't be shocked if you can only keep 1 pair in a 40b; though there are a lot of factors much of it come down to individual fishes. I once had 1 male and 2 females in a 120 and the 2nd female could not tolerate the first......
