Fish Herder
Well, after about 3 decades of fishkeeping (although with large gaps in there without fish) I have really been able to identify what I like, and don't like, about various different species of fish.
For me, character and relative peacefulness are everything. I don't care much about beauty, although it is a nice bonus in a characterful fish.
Aggression bugs me too, and is a surefire way of a fish getting me to rehome it.
I also really don't like active, hectic fish. I'm looking for tranquility in my tanks.
So, one fish that I have gravitated towards are Bettas ... for their character, not their looks. My betta at the moment is a Plakat, so he hasn't got those silly long fins either !
Also, big, peaceful cichlids. Severums and Uaru at the moment. Such characters. Gentle movers and really quite peaceful.
Fish that do my head in are all the hectic fish like danios, rainbows etc.
I even had some Geophagus a couple of weeks ago, and they were just too hectic for me. I know a lot of folks like very active fish like that, but not me.
Also, another group of fish which I simply cannot get into at all is the colourful, aggressive african cichlids. Too hectic, too agressive, and apart from that, they don't actually seem to do anything interesting, like root around for food etc.
Also discus ..... what's the point ? THey don't actually move, except at feeding time (I assume !!) or to rush around if they're frightened. Calm, yes, and beautiful, obviously, but I look for fish which display interesting behaviour.
Obviously, my opinions differ wildly from many here. So what types of fish do you like and why ?
