What Other "centerpieces" Would Work?

My tank is an established tank. If angels can't settle into an established tank, what am I supposed to do?. I leave for school in 35 days. I need to have the tank fully stocked by then. I don't have much time left to fight.

Are you buying juvis or adults? I keep my pH currently at 6.8-7.0 to breed but I've had them at 7.8-8 pH no issues

Well it shouldn't of been an issue as juvis but once they become adults 6 in a 46 gallon is quite a lot especially having other fish in there. Maybe try and find a pair of adult fish and try that out? or some slightly larger but I wouldn't go past 4 angels.

The point was to get them to pair off, and then rehome those who were not in the pair.
I wasn't planning to keep six adults in the tank. Buying an adult pair would cost me twice as much as 6 juvenilles.

Maybe just keep trying your lucky. It might be a seller issue do you have another LFS you can use? Also it might be worth trying some sort of blackwater extract like instant amazon. A small dose every now and then really seems to relax my fish.

I just got 8 off of aquabid too from a seller in Florida (and I'm in california) all are doing very well and my only problem now is that I need to thin the group.

It's a shame you're so far away Karin (somewhat locally speaking). I'd gladly take one or two off your hands.

I would go for some kind of Central American Cichlid like a firemouth or a sajica they will tollerate the high ph and all of you other fish will be fine with these cichlids as they are not the most aggressive of fish but a little territiorial and intenligent

I had a similar problem (although my angels were just plain nasty!) I replaced them with 3 pearl gouramis and they look great! DO IIIIIT!

What about gouramis? Or one of my favourits apistogramma cacatoide?

apistogramma cacatoide need soft water and a pH lower than 7. Bolivian Rams on the other hand are much more tolerant and will happily live in a pH of 7.8......but I dont think they are really a replacement for angels in terms of being a centerpiece.

I was gonna suggest some Pearl Gouramis too...! Until I saw they were gonna be with Serpae Tetras.. Not a good combination!

A good colourful centrepiece fish is;
Boesmani Rainbowfish as featured in the forum picture at the top of the page

Or Banded Rainbowfish

Both are fine with your aquarium and tankmates

They are nice but her tank is too small for a shoal of these rainbow fish. Channti, I just saw that they are selling 6 juvenile triple red cuckatoo cichlids for 18 USD! Check with the seller if he would ship to Canada. He does do overseas United States, so you might be lucky with him.

Edit: I kept my pearl gouramis with serpae tetras and as long as your shoal is big enough, the agression will be directed within the group and not towards other fish. Did keep them together for 2 years without problems.

Nope these fish need atleast a 20 gallon tank, theyle be more than fine in a 46 gallon!

No the big rainbows like Bosmani and the Banded one you showed need a minimum of 55g they get to a very chunky 5-6 inches and would barley be able to move in a 20 gallon as adults. I think you are thinking of the smaller rainbow species like Dwarf Neon Rainbows or Threadfin Rainbows etc.

Also I wouldnt really class these as center piece fish because they are a schooling fish that need to be kept in at least a group of 6 where as the OP wanted a fish as a centerpiece like a gourami or angelfish etc.


To Channti - how about a pair of rainbow cichlids? Nice peaceful fish and they shouldnt eat your tetras but would add a nice mid sized fish to your tank as well and they will do well in your hard water

It depends on the tank shape really. But the point is that The rainbowfish I mentioned can fit into a bowfront 46 gallon tank. You cant say that the rainbowfish need a 55gallon tank minimum(even if its preferable) when a large portion of websites say they can live in a 20 galllon, 30 gallon, 25 gallon and so on.

And that youre saying that centrepiece fish have to be a single fish i think is a personal opinion. Im my tank, I have shoal of large male Congo Tetra so...
