well if your doing water changes everyday then yes i can understand you having 0 nitrates, unless you have anaerobic bacteria living in the substrate which converts nitrate to nitrogen which gasses off.

overstocked tank will mean bad water quality, likelihood of deaths and disease. In my opinion your test kit is faulty as 0 NitrAte isnt normal. I wouldnt get anymore fish and Id look into getting more filtration, with an overstocked tank you need extra filtration for the tank to cope.

im not lying, i have said my test results and if they are that i cant help it, the last time i did a water change was 5 days ago, due to treating the tank for disease

thanks jonny, water stats are spot on 0,0,0, ph:7.8

even with better filtration you will be choked with nitrates still, but stronger filtration would be better and you should be doing 3 water changes a week with that stocking!!

What sort of diseases are you getting hun?
how often do you gravel vac ?
how often do you test the water?

you really should be gravel vaccing and water changing every week to prevent diseases staying in the tank even after treatment

;)

 probably not using the test kit properly,

@ adandrews can you go through step by step how you use your test kit, and which one you are using.

Yeah I agree, must be doing it wrong adandrews or your test kit is faulty. If your test kit is faulty or your doing it wrong, it may explain why youve been having illness problems in your tank.

As said, you may be testing wrongly for nitrAtes, this is easy to do as unless you follow the API kit to the letter, its easy to get a false result.

What symptons do the fish show before they die? How long do you have the fish before they die? How do you acclimatise them? You should really do more w/c at least once a week is better for the fish, even with perfect stats, clean fresh water is good for them.

On the stocking front, you really need to re-home those boesemani rainbows, they need much more room than a 54L can give them, they can reach 5" and really dont do well in small tanks.

the nitrates in my tank go to 0 2 days after a water change - 10-20 from tap , so wether his tank has got those thingy bacteria in then the results would be 0 like mine

anyway back to tough fish dont realy know what order to put em but

angelfish
bn plecos
comon plecos
livebarers

The tank sounds way over stocked to me...even with those that are now in the biorb.

If there is overcrowding the fish will get stressed - stress = illness

Re your tank stats - unusual to have 0 reading for nitrate usually.

Athena

thanks for help athena, not unusual to have 0 for nitrate- im using the API freshwater master test kit. the fish are all small including the rainbows, just nearly 2 inches, add it all up its only a little over stocked, and, there is plenty of space for swimming and if water stats are fine, how are they getting diseases

Hi - came back to this thread as I haven't been online for a few days.

The reason we are all saying your tank is overstocked has nothing to do with how much room they have for swimming. Being overstocked doesn't mean there isn't room for the fish to swim. It just means there are too many fish for that volume of tank water and the amount of waste they will produce will be too much for your filter to handle. Not only that but being in an overstocked tank will stress the fish, as mentioned before - and once fish become stressed it lowers their immune system and this leads to illness and deaths.

An old method of getting a rough idea of whether a tank is overstocked or not is the "1 inch of fish per gallon" method of calculation.

You have roughly a 15 US gallon tank (54 litres you said). So, your total stock should be about 15 inches of fish - you can go a bit above this amount depending on the type of fish (some are more messier than others) and also how regular you are at tank maintenance. Remember this is a guideline only but worth bearing in mind when stocking a tank and then it is up to you whether you go slightly over this amount and are prepared to do more frequent water changes, gravel vacs etc.

Anyway, adding up all your fish - you have 20 fish there - you say they are about 2inches each - ok, so that's 40 inches of fish already! For a tank with a stocking guideline of 15inches. That's almost 3 times the comfortable amount.

I'm really surprised that the ammonia/nitrite readings are at 0.

I think that in order to prevent any more of your fish getting diseased and dying it might be a good idea to try rehoming half of this stock - either setting up another tank or finding good homes for them (some LFS take fish back).

Just trying to help you with your current problem as I know its upsetting/frustrating when fish die - not having a go at you at all.

Regards - Athena

Is this tank by chance heavily planted? That might account for the nitrates being very low.
