Why Do people say stuff like that?

75 Gallons is for a oscar.

But 55 gallons for a little fish around 3 inchs??!

Simply becasue they don't stay 3 inch, possible 10 inch or more, huge waste producers. 55g is a bit extreme for one but i would say minimum 30 and the 10-15g more for each additional one.

common goldfish can't be kept in a 55G its simply not long or wide enough, they're pond fish and thats where they belong.

30 gallons minimum for 1 goldfish and an additional 10 gallons for each additional goldfish. External filtration at 10x turnover is essential.

Iv'e kept fancy goldfish and I would really say 20 gallons for the first goldifsh and 20 gallons fore every other one added.


Also they need double filteration as there massive waste producres.

I've always suggested Fancy goldfish as 20Gal for the first one and 10Gal for each additional one.

I'd also totally agree than comets and commons just aren't suitable for tanks.

They are messy fish. most get to be 5-8" IMO 10" is a really big one I think it is rare they get that big. It all depends on the fish. But the are not small fish.

sure you can grow them out in a smaller tank but once they grow up and they do live a long time. You will need a bigger tank.

fancy goldfish are not 3 inches mate, a good 5 inches.. plus they produce heavy ammounts of waste.

i DID have

A Red cap oranda before i brought my tropcal tank he was in a 5 gallon thenmoved him into my 15 gallon

then sold him the day i brought my tropical fish

( the red cap helped me how should we say? cyle the tank ? ) xD

As had been said, the reason these fish require these sized tanks are because they grow large. Fish in the shop when you buy then are normally either babies or very young.

As mentioned, fancy goldfish can reach around 8" and create a LOT of waste, requiring extremely good filtration. I'd always recommend 20 gal first 1st fish then 10 gal for every additional fancy.

Common goldfish / comets really shouldnt be in tanks, they are a pond fish and can easily grow in excess of 12"

You also mentioned oscars, they may be small in the pet shop but oscars grow fast and normally reach 12-14". You mentioned 75 gal for an oscar, thats correct but for an oscar on its own, no other tankmates. Oscars also create a lot of waste and require double filtration. Oscar will also eat any other tank mates that they can fit in their mouths.

Remember when buying fish that you have to consider their adult size and needs.

Just to add I would always suggest getting goldies in pairs, so the minimum tank I'd ever recommend them for is a 30gal.

Yep your right about 8 inch i would say the average but ive seen some in ponds (brothers to be one) which are 10 inches or more so i basically said the top end side because it's always a possibility

I've seen plenty much bigger than 8 inches. And fancies if kept properly for the amount of years they are supposed to live easily surpass 8 inches ( the largest so far is around 17 inches long , in the picture the owner had to hold him up with BOTH hands to be photographed ) .

The only reason many goldfish stay small is because they are kept in tanks that are too small for them, which stunts their growth. A vile thing to do any living creature. Their reputation as an "easy" cheap fish to keep is an extremely common misconception and a sad one.

Even fancies need 55 gals per pair because they do need the space to grow and swim. They may not be as quick as commons but they can shift when they want to !!!

Even though they fish you buy in any shop is a couple of inches long, it's best to get the 55 gal or biger from the beginning. Ok so it would look odd for a while with these two tiny orange fish in such a space, but they do a lot of growing in their first couple of years and over the next 10-15 will grow more slowly.

But by getting the big tank to start with, you save yourself the hassle and expense of upgrading every few months or years, and you won't risk stunting your fish to begin with.

Goldfish are small, but not *that* small. They grow. -.-; My friend has 2 goldfish in a 10-gallon tank.... Even after I told her "No, no more goldfish; one is enough," I don't feel like arguing with her; so, I'm not telling her anything more. -.-; Ughs.... SOme peoples....
