you should always provide the most suitable diet for whatever fish you are keeping. Generally speaking providing a variety of foods is important, so dont just rely on one type all the time.

Each week I feed my fish frozen daphnia, mosquito lavae, tubifex worms, 'greens', shelled peas, 3 types of flake (veg, 'colour enchancing' and regular, cucumber, algae wafers & blood worm pellets. I have a little daily chart to remind me which food to feed each day so I can make sure I'm varying their diet.

i mix between normal cheap flake, tetra pro flake 'discs', frozen bloodworm, frozen daphnia, freeze dried tubifex, catfish pellets, tropical pellets, cucumber and hikari algae discs. whenever i feed in the morning i always put in a pinch of catfish pellets, a pinch of tropical pellets, a pinch of either type of flake and an algae disc. in the evening a pinch of whatever flake i didnt use earlier, a pinch of catfish pellets and one of bloodworm, daphnia or tubifex. with the daphnia and tubifex i use half a block as theres loads in them. every 3 or 4 days i put a piece of cucumber in.

there's loads of things you can feed plecs as long as they are prepared correctly. Carrots, courget/zucchini, pumpkin, apple.....

Pumpkin, now you're going to make me put a halloween carved out pumpkin in my fish tank :hyper:

was just wondering how long you keep veg such as courgette in the tank for? I have just got a bn plec so will have to start feeding some veg other than peas, but I normally feed flake, frozen bloodworm and frozen artemia on alternate days

some will say 12hrs, some will say 24 but I think generally speaking you dont want it in the tank for more than 24 as you run the risk of letting it foul up the water.

I add mine at around 7pm, then remove the following day at about 5pm. This gives the plec chance to demolish it and my snails a chance to find it. Have found my cichlids nibbling on it as well.

mine dont usually last very long. last time i put 2 bits in at mid-afternoon time, and when i got up in the morning (5am) they were just cucumber rings. which is when i guess they've finished with it.

not sure how long you can leave it, but certainly i'd say no more than 24 hours.

i'm new too so i don't know how to shell peas. Do you mean remove the pod that peas grow in or take the thin papery coating off the individual peas?

indeed, literally peeling each individual pea.

i thought the same as you when i first heard

hikari pellets , prawn , peas, crickets, mealworms, mealworm beetles and any bugs etc that are stupid enough to come into the house

I feed my German Blue Ram (omnivore) a range of flakes manufactured by Ocean Nutrition. Some contain quite a high concentration of protein, whereas others contain vegetable extract. In addition, I feed defrosted bloodworms every 5-7 days.

The other fish in the tank also consume the flakes I offer but my Dwarf sucker-mouth catfish purely eats green/brown algae and Tetra Tabimin (high protein sinking tablet).

Mixture of two types of flake, mini pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworm & Veg. And live foods as a very rare treat.

James.

I've heard of people feeding earthworms (from your back garden) to cichlids, mostly larger cichlids..
Do you think that is good or even safe for the fish?
