What Can I Add?

Hey Guys,

Me and the wife are off to buy a couple more fish tommorow.

We have 3 Tiger Barbs
and 3 Clown loach

we want something quite active what could we add, i love loachs but wife likes something coloufull.


Any ideas???

Silver Dollar Fish,
they are generally peaceful. It is best to keep them in small schools of 4 or more. They may become scared easily if not kept in schools.
The male's anal fin will have a small amount of red on it, Tank Mates : Many, due to their peaceful nature


Swordtails fish
keep them as 1 male 2 females the males are the one's with the sword. The females are also are able to save some sperms for later fertilization and the fry grow in the female where they consume the yolk stores. The female’s pregnancy can be identified by the dark body in front of the anal fin


Albino Shark
It loves a hiding place. A cave or something similar. It however doesn't like its own speicie or the red tailed black shark and will often fight. So one albino shark per tank is recomended. It is very hard to breed.

Silver dollars get far too big for that size tank. They are cute little fish at the store but get about as your hand or a bit bigger.
You could probably get away with swordtails but only have one male in a tank that size. They sort of get into a dominance thing unless they have plenty of room to avoid each other. Many of the more common pet shop fish will have a rough time with tiger barbs because they are so frantic in their movements and are nippy in the bargain.

could i get Bala sharks like 2 of them as i will be moving into big tank before they get chance to grow that big

no clown loaches (get 12" easy and need to be in groups of 3-6, so youll need 100+ gallons

NO bala sharks (i think they get 1.5' and need to school in 6, so youll need even more tank space than the loaches)

dont mean to be blunt, but i just dont want you or the fish to get into a mess.


lose the loaches and get 6+ cories, then get 3more tiger barbs and another school of 6-8 fish of another barb. its a little hard to get tankmates for tigers hehe

be sure to space out the addings to every other month, and for every 2 fish you currently have,you can ge Half of it, as longs it s near the same size. (ie. 6 fish in tank,can add 3)

Agree with mojo. You shouldnt really buy fish and put them in a tank thats too small, even if you have the intention of upgrading the tank. If for some reason your had a financial crisis or anything along them lines meaning you couldnt get the bigger tank then the fish are stuck in a tank that simply isnt big enough.

I'm guessing you know that your current tank isnt big enough for the clown loaches in the long run. Don't add any more 'big' fish until you have a larger tank up and running.

Seems like sensible advice to me. If you plan to keep the current tank up and running (once the clowns and barbs move over), then stock it with fish that you want in there long term (and that are suitable with the barbs short term).

But I have to agree, I wouldn't get any stock that is destined for the new big tank until the new big tank is actually sat ready and waiting.
