I tried really hard to get rid of these fish, but every time I sold them off, a few young were hidden in their planted tanks. Gold Ancistrus, an unnatural colour form from the hobby, are the guppies of Loracarid cats.
I got mine right before the pandemic as a bag on one cm fry. A local kid had a pair breeding in his fishtank and was being overwhelmed. His Mom asked me if I could catch and take them, then grow and give them away to the fish club. It seemed an easy project, at the time.
Then the pandemic hit, right when my wife became seriously ill. The fish club stopped operating for a long time. We were locked down as with chemo involved, the virus was extra dangerous. She dodged the bullets, and as the dust settled, we retired early and moved. The fish club hadn't reopened. The catfish came with me - the only human modified fish I kept. I tried to get rid of them. I gave them to a struggling store until they couldn't sell any more.
My daughter took a male one home, and had him for a couple of years before the trade wars just forced her to move away. And so, he came back to me. I also have 5 of his offspring scattered around my tanks. They're good algae eaters, with the limitations every algae eaters have. If anyone in the local club here wants them, I give them away, but there always seems to be another small one popping out from the weeds. I've grown used to them. Because of giving them away, I hadn't kept any to see just how magnificent their snouts could become. This guy impresses me.
