What's new

What became of aquabarb ?

Plants schmants . Are you a botanist or an aquarist ?
Neither - i'm just your average joe - no better no worse. Don't need fancy names like botanist or aquarist. Those are for your non-average joe or if need be jane.

Bare Tank Man is an unlikely supehero...I used to have sparse looking tanks because I was bad at plant growing. I still lack skills, but I'm working on it. I don't know any aquarium botanists, though there could be some here lurking under fake online names. But gardeners? There are tons of them, just as there are aquarists/fishkeepers.

I like putting it all together. Some people here have biotope tanks, with everything from one habitat. I admire that, from afar. I'm still at the stage of throwing things together because they grow.

I think what it comes down to, is the world is a busy and variable place… what ever we do, it has to be worth our time, to fit it in… so what do you get from the forum??? why are you here… some times, some people have nothing to do, some people just like to argue, some are looking for reassurance or acknoloedgement of their accomplishments, others need information… our lives or spare time change, and often the negatives out weigh the positives, maybe it’s a particular member, maybe the hobby has changed importance in a members life… I have several ex forums, one in particular, I no longer partake in that hobby, one, I still partake, but this forum in a different hobby, has replaced my available screen time… sometimes our hobby changes, out of the parameters of a particular forum…

I’m here to win hearts and minds , be somebody and have an occasional laugh . If that occasional laugh can come at someone else’s expense occasionally then so much the better . Nothing to do ? Yeah , sometimes and that’s when hilarity ensues 🤣 .

I like aquarium talk, and since I moved out of a city into a beautiful backwater, I don't get to use my voice for that. At times, I'm just bored, really. And the subjects people here discuss aren't boring to me. Nor are the people who discuss here - you're a curious lot.

I rarely if ever watch TV, am not into media other than music, am not a gamer and spend a lot of time in the house caring for an elderly relative in poor health. If in the future I take a part time or volunteer job, or get busier, then I'll check in less.

That sums it up good for me in several ways . I don’t know any fellow fish keepers here in my burg and I do like aquarium talk too . After sixty years with fish I definitely am interested in them . The thing I like a lot here is the sometimes detailed answers you get . Little snippets don’t satisfy me as much as the scholarly treatises that appear on the odd occasion . And the PEOPLE ! A curious lot ? At least that 🤣 .

Tom Barr is an aquatic plant person with the degrees. I had a few exchanges with him decades back. Here is his forum for all things Aquatic plant: https://barrreport.com/

Also, I would bet dollars to Java Ferns that CassCats would be able to help a member here with plant Qs. I have been reading here posts for years both here and another forum and She has forgotten more about aquarium plants that I know. I also consider her to be a Master Aquascaper.

Over the years I have contacted a number of published researchers. This comes from reading their papers or meeting them at weekend events where they were either attendees or speakers.

Because I am not a scientist, but did major in Psych which required reading and even designing experiments and learning how to do this, I am weak on certain ot the more technical aspects. And example it genetic testing. I know what it is about and can understand the conclusions relative to it I read in papers. What I do not know is what are them better and more comprehensive testing protocols.

The result is I need to ask those who do know these things about the quality of some of the tools used in research. However, every paper has a lead researcher listed as the contact and usually their email is provided. If a person like me contacts such leaders with a question, as long as I am polite, not arrogant and respectful, I get a response when I contact these folks with a Q.

Scientist mostly want nothing to do with sites like TFF etc. The reason is simple, here are often fools who with no qualifications or training who are rude and behave poorly. Scientists have better things to do than argue in a forum with ignorant people. If one shows the PhDs the respect they have earned and are due, they are usually more than willing to give a bit of their time to answer questions from amateurs like me.
