February is "watch out" month for weather on the Canadian East Coast. It can get nasty. But as summer ends in late August, we get hot days and cool nights. I choose to believe we're entering a beginning, as we have the same, relatively. It's getting to around freezing by day but sitting at -15 when I get up in the dark morning. The temperatures will dive, and this is always temporary, but winter's back is broken. Only, oh, 2 more months of cold... maybe 3!
I have truly run a lot of my aquarium equipment into the ground. In the last two weeks, a 10 year old led strip has failed. Two over 15 year old aquaclears are stopping and starting randomly, and the impeller shafts are beyond replacement. One unnamed Chinese HOB has died - the last of a box full I bought also more than 15 years ago.
So today, I am expecting the arrival of a few new HOBs. Lychee brand. I tried a purchase 2 weeks ago to check them, and since they seem good for the 20 gallon tanks I'm going to use them on, I am now adding. All my tanks HOB have 2 systems - air driven as well. I'd love to have bought locally, but where fish stores used to make their money on dry goods, that's no more. With competition from online, they don't offer much variety.
This'll put my mind at ease because I'll be away for just under 2 weeks next month, and my wife is not going to be asked to fix and restart filters or feed fish. I'll switch over media, fire them up and have exactly a month to see how they do.
I've moved or restarted a bunch of tanks. I have six top rack 10 gallons for possible Epiplatys and Aphyosemion killies, a 20 if I catch Poropanchax luxopthalmus killies, 3 10s planted and running for whatever surprises me, and 3 larger tanks for possible Pelvicachromis taeniatus dwarf cichlids. When I get home, I'll have been in airports from 4am on day one to early afternoon on day two, and I'll be tired. Last time, I lost a pair of fish to being too tired and leaving a cover ajar. This time, I'll be better prepared.
28 days to go. I hope I actually catch more than a cold. I don't think I can sneak a herd of giraffes in my luggage. They'd probably confuse the deer out back anyway.
The last of the vaccinations today.
