What are you doing today?

Some nice geeky stuff - i've been getting a bunch of spam mail lately maybe 10x more than usual so i did a bit of grepping on the mail logs and determine it is all being sent by google. Yes google has become a nightmare spammer.

I don't allow anything Google on any of my systems. I DO have a G-mail account but don't monitor.

You don't get it so i will explain it - if you examine the ip of who SEND you email you will see that a lot of spam mail comes from google own cloud service. Not having google on your system does not determine who sends you email.

These are not gmail accounts these emails are generated with their own domain but originate from google cloud - an example:

client-ip=34.6.210.205; envelope-from=marriott@giveaway.com

All you see is From: marriott@giveaway.com but if you examine the ip it originated from you will see 34.6.210.205 which is:
205.210.6.34.bc.googleusercontent.com

and the owner of googleusercontent.com is you guessed it google.com

But I would think that Google would have to have your email address that is getting the spam. Of course it is also possible that the spammers got your receiving address elsewhere and is just using a Google account to distribute.

I'm a bit surprised that AOL is still around. My sister still uses an AOL account for email. Actually AOL was one of the first to get in bed with the bad guys. Of course Google has done worse such as falsifying security test results when the Chrome browser came out to make it look like the most secure browser.

And Microsoft isn't much better, especially when it comes to bloat. The main reason that Windows 11 needs 64 GB of disk space is that they don't tend to get rid of features that are no longer supported but just add on and then add on some more. And, of course, they keep adding more and more apps to the install. I'm sure there are hacked Win 11/10 install media that does not add the bloat but I would never use as, too often, such things include a 'back door' access to the system. There is also third party software to remove the bloat but, again, I would not use as most don't check if, say a DLL file, is jointly needed for another app that is actually wanted so just goes ahead and removes leaving the wanted app not working.

It is a cloud service - google customer is generating the email. Most email address leak from hacks or usage in public arena. There are massive list of emails out in teh wild that spammers can obtain. It really has nothing to do with google other than google not policing the use of their services.

Yet, when I used to use my G-mail account, I got a lot of spam. Since, many years ago, when I quit Google, I Might get 3 spam emails a week. I still consider Google as a helper for spammers and they can make so much money from this aspect that pretty much nothing would change my mind.

I have 3 Gmail accounts connected to one device. Currently has 14,134 unopened emails .

I take a basic view that tech companies are all predatory unethical robber barons, and that my interests and theirs are not even close. Microsoft is the worst, with Meta and Google running neck and neck with them. All empires are evil, and we're all peasants who try to do what we can in spite of our masters. It's a bleak world view, but then I clicked on firefox when I turned on the laptop this morning, and Bing popped up uninvited. If these people could install pay toilets in our houses, they would. Then they'd be looking at charging us for the use of our floors to get to them.

In the words of the rapper Akala, "absolute power corrupts absolutely, but absolute powerlessness does the same". So I go back to playing with fish.

I think that what Gary says is true: Most businesses (especially big businesses) are not running charities; they're in it to make money. But the complicating factor, of course, is that they make money by providing services that people want or need. I sometimes feel a little weird when people harshly criticize "big oil" or "big pharma," as if they're something special, and as if the person doing the criticizing isn't using their products too. They're just businesses, doing what businesses do: trying to get rich by providing something that people want or need. They get crooked, sure. But when they become that big, I think it's almost impossible for them not to.

Small businesses often avoid this because they stay close to the people that they are serving. There is something powerful about mindfully dealing with fellow human beings whom we know and relate to. I've known the manager of the local fish store for many years; our kids are in band together. The local book store is owned by a lady who lives just down the street and has been a guest performer with my Irish band. Are people like that likely to intentionally rip me off? No, there's a level of accountability in knowing that I'm going to see this person again, in knowing that they are going to have an opinion of me based on our dealings, in knowing that ripping them off will adversely affect a fellow human being's life, someone I know, someone I actually care about on some level.

At the "big corporation" level, it's all too easy for the powers to forget that. When your customers don't have faces, personalities, and life-stories, they become numbers. And there's no big moral catch with manipulating numbers, right???

I worked in corporate for a short time, and knew things I had a non disclosure agreement making me shut up about. No 'small' person mattered .

As a highly paid (trillion bucks a year, baby) fish forum moderator, I support such heartlessness with all my own shriveled heart and soul. The jet's two years old though, and we need an upgrade for when we go fish shopping. We're entitled to such necessities here.

I am doing my military obligation today. Being retired Navy it is mandatory that I watch the college football Army/Navy game. I can't remember the last time I missed this game.

Other than that I'm doing updates on my computer systems. LOL! Sometimes it is a pain having 6 systems, with a total of 7 operating systems can be a pain. My Mac Book Air is the worst, takes forever it there is an operating system update.

You all do realize that dick van dyke is about to turn 100. 100 years - 100 times - a lot of candles.

I baked a cake in honor of Dick Van Dyke tonight. It was delicious.
