I bought 4 Flier cichlids about 2/3 yrs ago, and 1 pair have spawned repeatedly, and Just recently the remaining pair have spawned!!,

They look spectacular in their breeding dress.

Been trying for a year to hatch the older pairs eggs, but no luck yet :( ,

The tank I think is infected with BGA, but it doesn't stop them laying, the PH is about 7 and I only use RO Water. The eggs just go opaque after about 4 days, when i guess they should hatch after two!

Any one got any ideas

It's a RIO 180l tank, with four cichlids and 5 small tetra (target fish), maybe it's the BGA, altho the fish don't seem bothered.

Look up the member 'Dany' from Wales i remember reading that he has bred Flyers, and had some for sale he may be able to advise you there.

Not sure if Flyers do the same, but, Oscars sometimes pair up as 2 females.. they clean stones and lay eggs etc etc, but obviously, the eggs never hatch. I'm sure 2 of my Blue Acara have paired up as 2 males, they defend an area quite strongly, clean a few stones, do the whole shaking thing when near each other, but no eggs are ever laid.

Happened to me to mate. Bought 4 T-bar Cichlids (Cryptoheros Sajica) and I have two successful pairs.
So happy :)

DANY FROM WALES IS HERE!!!! YEY ANOTHER OWNER OF FLYER CICHLIDS! so far me and you are the only owners of flyer cichlids on this site, (i think) got any pics? if you need any advice dont hesitate to ask...

It's quite possible they are 2 females... it's also possible that your male is infertile.. A pair of my severums like to lay eggs, they turn beige like they are fertile, then they begin to turn white a few days later and are then eaten... The parents could just not be good at keeping the eggs clean.. it's hard to say.

Thanks for all the replies! :)

The older pair I would say are a true pair, as I have witnessed the egg laying in my homemade cave (6" pvc pipe), then she comes out and the male goes in and dances right next to them but not touching or laying, i.e. trying to fertilize them. I hope the male isn't infertile.. but they did all come from the same LFS, so may be from the same family.
nature does have ways of stopping this, but for fish?

The Blue Green Algae is a real pain, I'm trying to track down some Maracyn (something like that) to treat it to avoid stripping the tank down.

As BGA is an infection not a plant, I suppose I shud get rid of it before i decide all my fish are infertile. What does anyone think? plus I would love to have a good looking tank again!

Dany, I was told these fish were not that common, but they are probably the most spectacular fresh water fish I've owned. I love em!

Do your fish spawn all year or just spring summer?

have you actually raised any young yet?, would be very interested in the stages and feeding after the hatching, if i ever get that far!!

All the info I have is:

Eggs are laid and take 2 days to hatch, a week later they are free swimming, and two weeks later they need seperating from the parents or vice versa.

Any views comments much appreciated ;)

It's quite possible they are 2 females...

i aim rasing them as we speak there three weeks old into free swimming sunday and ye, really are lovely fish. yes as you say they are rare and you are the only other person i have ever talked to on this site (or anywhere else) that owns them. my pair breed all year round and the eggs take about 4 days to hatch/males and females look compleatly different. the females are dark, blue and not at all deep bodied. the male on the other hand is baby blue and much larger and is much more deep bodied.male flyer female flyer breeding colours
i have some babies coming along now and i feed them on liquifry, baby brine shrimp and powdered food for baby fish and they seem to be coming along nicey.
Dany :good:

Im gonna be a future owner of flyers, thanks to dany !

Im gonna want to breed them aswell, so will need to source another place where to buy them, i dont want inbreeding

i have a 60 gallon devoted to my flyers, maybe fatty would want to send the fish that lays to me via post where she can be bred with a fertile male and then sent back after a month or so and i will split any profit in half, therefor saboy could have some of the fry by those two....

they seem to pair up easily enough... :good:

Do you mean I can have some fry from the fry you have now dany, and then also from the ones, if you do get them sent over in post to breed ?

Or am i getting confuzed a bit here ?

Dany, when the time comes to get some fry off you , how many you reccon I should get from you ?

Im thinking 4 , just incase some could die in the post.

Im gonna have to find another source of flyers to get the pairing up , got any ideas where ?

i think i the one whos confused now. :S
what i meant is, if fatty would like to breed his fish with a fertile male, then he could send a female over and hope that it pair up with one of my many flyers, then when they have done breeding i could either, buy the flyer off him, or send it back to him, flyers do grow to about 6 - 7 " )male anyways and can be quite chunky. so i dont like the idea of me sending one of my fish over to fatty when he already has 4 in a 180,

thaat i think is the only other source that yyou may be able to get flyers from saboy.

get it? or still confused.

I didnt mean get the fry for free if thats what you thought ? Im more than willing to pay for them, they are a great fish
