BUHH??? water hardness is from disolved Salts inside the water.... maybe boiling these will evaporate them, salts as in the oxidized metals and calciums found in your pipes and in the supply of water from your area...

ie the calcium that makes up limestone on which your local water supply may be based,

I cant possibly boil that much water for a water change every week, im planning about 100 litres a week to be changed.

I have thought about using ro water, but is it really needed, i dont think so.

is it possible to acclimise from your water to mine safely ?

I would do it very slowly,

The only thing that I am a little worried about is the acclimation from danys water to mine.

I feel I am quite close to hatching the eggs, the best thing I did was to put a section of large pvc pipe in the tank, they love it, and lay their eggs on the under side upside down.

The fish did the rest, altho i suppose I havn't done the hardest bit yet!

Acclimitisation can be tricky from post, as the fish will probably have been quite stressed. The best bet is to monitor the fish in the bag, and react if it's not looking good. I know from marine fish it's best to do it as slowly as fish will allow, but in emergency situations there are probably things you can do, such as introducing an airline with a medium bubble to re-oxygenate the water slowly in the bag. If your worried about the ph, i would maybe setup a holding tank with the ph range inbetween so acclimatize over 24, 48 hrs. You could argue this puts more stress on the fish, with all this said a normal aclimitization might be all thats required maybe extend it over 1 or two hours instead of 30 mins. You could invest in one of those semi permeable bags which does it for you. Hopefully you won't have any problems.

try searching acclimitization, there are a few posts on the topic that may be of use.

why dont you lower the ph? get a few big pieces of wood in there or what other methods there are around.

where are those pics fatty? :shifty:

Need to wait for them to get out of their breeding dress!, and a little conditioning later...

Thanks for that fatty, I was tihnking about 1 hour, to 2 hours, didnt think about airstone, and also I did think about the stress from posting,

I also think that it should be fine, as long as it is done slowly

Watch out for the airstone, may produce too finer bubbles and cause a rapid change in oxygen thus ph etc..

Try just the end of an air line, the distruption at the surface should cause a gradual increase in oxygen. On the other hand if the fish looks fine and not gasping, there is possibly no need for additional oxygen.

You could always get Dany to send an extra bag of just water, and net them straight into Danys new water which might be minimal shock, then start the acclimitization? not sure about that one?

Oh yeh, boiling the water concentrates salts and chlorine, but does rid the water of some chemicals. RO water rocks!

you asked should you use ro water. i said its not essential. you could use it in your fry tank and accumilate them from your big tank to your fry tank.... (fry)

Ok, but I would need to know if this is completly needed if I would get fry from uresellf

i really dont know, but to maximize the chances id go with a ph of 7.

compleatly off the topic but i dont suppose anyone has read the book Jane Eyre by any chance have they?

20 page essay on book that hasnt by read + stupid me = me in deep trouble!

I would say its worth a try, I would think that I would have success in doing the traditional process to acclimizing, but I will extend the time, to proly 1:30 hours, first let sit in tank water for 30hour, open the bag, wait 10 mins, add bit of tank water into bag, wait 20 mins, add more tank water, wait 20 mins, if bag gets full, then empty out (not into tank) and then carry on every 20 mins, up to 2 hours or so ?

Sound alright ? Oh, and do you have the right stuff for packaging fish ? as in pure oxygen , poly box, etc Just wondering
