Ok no probs, :) how much longer till the fry can be ready to be posted ? I would be ready to take them in about 1 and a half months time

no problem, sorry for the hyjack fatty...

No Hijack, just a change in direction , a good one too!..

I know what you mean about the 180l tank and four cichlids, a bit of a squeeze. The plan was/is to get a breeding pair and swap/sell the others. I would only look to have one pair, at the moment the additional pair are only 2" and 1+1/2", the main pair being 4" female and 3" male.

At the moment I want to leave as many options open as possible.

I had a look at the videos, great idea but a bit dark. I can't really see much difference between my females and males (probably inexperience) it doesn't seem very obvious.

If you're talking swapping, I'm thinking I could stand a better chance at getting a viable pair, and no inbreeding. How big do the fish need to be to produce fry?

Am quite attached to my 4" female, but maybe you have a laying female that we could swap thus pretending that she didn't go anywhere!, and spreading good genes!

Not sure about posting tho?. maybe meet halfway, only take me an hour and 1/4 to get into wales from the west midlands.

What do you think Dany?

And how much can you sell the fry for anyways?? :hey:

Fatty

the fry (i think) are sexualy mature at about 3". chances are they are two females because they do look so much different but you cant notice because you havnt possible seen a male... i only have one breeding pair at the mo all the others are little. no pairs from the little ones.

at the moment the additional pair are only 2" and 1+1/2",
you say youv had them 3, 4 years and there only this size? are you sure they are flyers?

i think that the male would notice the change in partner aswell!

dont know how much im selling for yet.

Give me a price... we can compramize.. :shifty:

How much would postage be ? any ideas ? well i suppose it does depend on the weight, and what company you use ? obviously next day

Hi,

They are 100% Archocentrus Centrarchus!,

2/3 years, if you are not impressed with growth rate must be closer to 2 yrs. I don't feed them loads, I like to keep my fish hungry, but I try not to be cruel!

I do wonder if I have a pair, with the lack of fry. But just today a few eggs looked viable, I could see black dots in the centre, and just 5 mins ago she ate them all up, doh!

Dany, is your pair from different sources (not inbreeding?)? If not I think we should swap one for the good of the species :)

Fatty

Here they are, no comments on the BGA, it's a sensitive subject!

The next pic is when the other "male" decided to visit the bigger pairs side of the tank,

He was seen off pretty quick..

Generally I am suprised for cichlids how peacful they are, no real killer agression yet...

the idea that one female was sent to me was because i have 75 or so just under half inch. when they are big enough you can send your female to pair up with on of mine. the chances of your male exepting my female are slim and would probably kill her. But if yours is sent to me i still have the tiddlers that she can pair up with(she has a choice of over 35 males (ish) and because they will be roughfly the same size they wont do any damage to her.)what you can do if you want is once the eggs are laid and fertailes. mail them to me (stuck to the rock obviosly) and i will try my best to hatch them for you. when they are big enough i will send them back (with your rock of course) :good:

the younger "pair" are both females!
but yeah definatly flyers..

Ahh , now that i have seen more pictures, I want them so bad now,

I was thinking, for me to get a pair or 2, I will need different sources for the potencial breeders,

I could get some fry from fatty,(if they pair are NON related) and add them to the fry that I want to get from dany,

I have been looking to find flyers from elsewhere to no good, so you two are my best bet !.

Could I ask what your water is like fatty and dany ? Cause I could only put my pair straight into(after acclimisation(sp?) ) tapwater, which is ph 8.0 and hard

try this link for more pics..link
note, that male in those pics is UGLY. most flyers are more blue instead of that green colour there and just look alot better, the male there looks think and unhealthy :X

What do you mean tank mates ? I dont have the 6x2x2 yet that they gonna go in.

Is your water hard and can they acclimize well ? This is part of the reason why i want them larger, as they are stronger, and can take more than fry

saboy>"Could I ask what your water is like fatty and dany ? Cause I could only put my pair straight into(after acclimisation(sp?) ) tapwater, which is ph 8.0 and hard"

Saboy, i started off with tap water, and they did spawn. Reading up about them they do seem to be hardy fish so I don't think you will have problems... Maybe just with eggs?

I now use RO water and a Ph buffer to increase to 7-8. I have a fluval 2, i think and the internal filter on a jewel rio 180L.... but I'd go with Danys set up as I have yet to hatch eggs!

Dany, Oh, I see what you mean :S , Sounds like a good idea to me. The find a male idea.. The egg thing, thanks for offering, the main thing is I would love to hatch and raise the fry myself in my tank. It's the whole I've managed to do it thing. But any help is really appreciated!

Dany>"the younger "pair" are both females!"

How sure are you?

How on earth do you tell the males/females apart, I can't see any differences in blue colour between the females on the photo and the breeding pair (when not in breeding dress). Mainly all of my cichlids change colour from second to second and when I bought them they were 4 different sizes i.e tiny, less tiny, small, and less small!

I have noticed differences on the end of the breeding tubes, the male seems to have a black dot on the end and the female is just tubular empty waiting for eggs to lay.

Any other tips on sexing?

Just read Danys last post. Shud my water be neutral? is this where i am going wrong? :X , ph of 7-8.

Sorry for the mess of the post, any help very welcome, thanks

Fatty :good:
