Weird looking fish I am looking to identify

Panchax for sure, Be careful what you keep it with. If it is a golden panchax it is likely to eat anything it can fit in its mouth.

I second munroco, they can be aggressive little buggers. We had some in our tank a while back, (but I think ours were the gardeneri verity) they lived quite happily for almost 6 months in a community tank but then they went mad! I lost a few guppies and my parents lost a gourami and a Molly so be careful!

I agree the fish has a deformity, sadly.  Let's hope it is genetic and not something likely to spread.

One suggestion I have is to caution you on buying fish without knowing exactly what it is.  Fish are living creatures that have evolved to suite a particular environment, and each species is different with respect to its needs (water, habitat, space) plus it may have unique traits.  Without knowing exactly what you are acquiring, it is often impossible to provide a suitable environment for the fish, plus there is the danger it may seriously affect your existing fish and aquarium.  Always research in advance of acquisition.  It can save much grief for you, but also be kinder to the fish.

Byron.

Here's my guess. And look at his permenant smile...how could I not get him? He was hanging out in a tank loaded with mollies and he is pretty large and just hanging our in their midst undetected.
He's still alive today so he's made it overnight atleast... he is eating fish flakes as well. He's in there with a creamcicle lyre tail and a smaller fish and he's peaceful.

Wow, it does look like a panchax, too.
You guys are great. I named him Nessie because he's the Aquariumness Monster. I was born with a spine defect that only a few people in the world have ever had, so needless to say, I'm attached to this "unperfect" fish.

His 2 Tankmates.
I have another aquarium, so if he picked on one of the others I already have a well established tank I can move his Tankmates to.

That might be the coolest fish ever.  Great find!
Thanks! I think he's pretty special.

The lyre tail was sitting on the bottom of the tank when I got home. I thought he/she was dead, but it swam around when I went to scoop it with the net.
I hope it doesn't die.
The deformed one is doing well and so is the small red fish.

It's unfortunate but you may want to give Nessie his own permanent tank.  Build that tank around Nessie and what's compatible to him or maybe a solo tank.   Your other buddies may get hurt more severally especially if the people who responded to your post previously are saying that.  They are pretty much fish scientist.  There's nothing wrong with multiple tanks.  I have four.

Quick story:

When I first started, I had about $150 bucks worth of glow fish about 15 of them total.  I did everything right, introduced them slowly, cycled the tank first, really proud of my set up.  The guys and gals on the site helped me out the whole way in the chat and forums. I Had it for a while  and then one day I saw this electric blue cray fish and I could not resist.  I had to have it!!!

The lady at petsmart said absolutely you can put this blue cray fish in with your glo fish!  In my mind I'm going there is no possible way, this thing looks like a killer and I knew never to listen to random people at some stores but something took over me.   I didn't consult the people here in the chat room for the first time!  It was impulse buy on Saturday night  and the Next day $90 worth, 9 total of my glo fish were chopped in half floating around.   I went to the chat and said WHAT Happened!!!! Apparently they hunt at night and my glo fish had no chance.

Seeing the raw power of the electric blue cray fish, I naturally went out that day and got him a beautiful 20 gallon set up and built a tank specifically around him.

Best of luck!!!

The lyre tail was acting bazerk in the store and I thought "what a fun active fish!" So I think there's a possibility that he wasn't right when I got him last night. Nessie actually backed away when the smaller fish went after some food and swam in front of him. He's showing no agressive behavior thankfully but I realize that could change.
I moved the lyre to my other tank with some tetras but he was pretty much already belly up most of the time and trying to upright himself, I doubt he'll live through the night.
I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me and I 100% agree that I will build this tank around Nessie. He and the red fish hang out at the surface together all day and they've both been great. If I see ANY sign of distress I'll move the smaller fish out and Nessie can be a lone sea monster if need be. :)
And sorry about your glofish! The petstore has 3 crayfish - 1 in each tank filled with little neon tetras! Talking about an all you can eat buffet right there :(
I even said shouldn't they be separated because they will eat those tetras and she shrugged and said as long as they have somewhere to hide and you feed them ok that it isn't a big issue...uh yea. The poor tetras were huddled in the top as far away from the side the cray was on as they could get!

If your red fish is a little platy (which it kinda looks like from your pic) they were the only fish in my tank my killies didn't attack, I dont know if they were just to fast for them or what but I had 7 in with them and none had any nipped tails/fins when almost every other fish did!

So they might live quite happily together but then again the might not, as it's only the two in there you may be lucky.

I can see why you couldn't resist him though, that face!

Good luck with him :)

I believe it is a platy. I had 2 of them in my other tank but a tetra bullied one to death and picked at his fins so bad he didn't make it.
I dropped the bully off at a fish store then when I got the bigger tank, I moved him over once the levels were good.
That leaves 4 tetras and a white cloud minnow in the other tank.
Nessie and the platy both seem to enjoy the surface and stay together most of the day. So far, so good!

Lots of fish will demonstrate more aggressive tendencies when not kept in proper numbers.  Tetras are shoaling fish and should never be kept in less than 6 - though more is always better.

I'm not opposed to getting more but does it have to be that exact kind of tetra....or any tetra?

Same species.
