WalMart blows....

Maybe slightly off-topic, but has anyone else heard that WalMart flushes any bettas that are still alive the night before they're due for a new shipment of them?

That was what got me started on keeping them and, I suppose, why I still do. I don't see the harm in bringing home a betta that's covered in fungus or suffering from parasites to bring back to health myself if it's just going to be flushed down the toilet ready for the "new" bettas, anyway. Sure, I may be putting a couple of bucks in WalMart's pocket, but with the amount of complaining they've had from me not only as an employee but also as a customer, 9 times out of 10 I get the betta cheap, and I get my employee discount on top of that as well.

I think it's a good thing this topic was brought up - it's interesting to see everyone else's opinion.

Oh is THAT where all the females go? :sly:

I've seen bettas stay at my local Walmart through a new shipment or two, so I know for sure that they don't always do that... but one week they got a new shipment of females and none of the 5 females they had left from the last shipment were anywhere to be seen. I'm a little suspicious, since no one ever buys the females but me and I know I didn't take them, hah.

It's incredibly frustrating, too. I did what I could and luckily got them to reduce the betta shipments from 20 to 10 fish each week, but it still doesn't seem to be enough...I suppose it goes back to the whole "people funding WMs fish iltreatment" thing.

The way this post started was a little irritating to me, and so help me god cation if you bring up how long you have been here to dis-credit me I will flip. I may have only been here since January, but my opinion and knowledge still counts. I have never rescued a Betta from WM, because I have never seen one that needed it. But, I still say people who do are good human beings. Cause let me tell you, if that was a sick little puppy sitting in the store you wouldnt turn around and say "No way, if I bring this sick puppy home and save its life I will be promoting Wal-mart buying more puppies and letting them get sick". If you did, you are a not-so-nice person. A life is a life, and letting something suffer and die just to make a point is very, very wrong. This is why, if I ever walk into WM and see a sick betta.....I WILL rescue it and I dont really care what anyone says. There, I said my peace.

Well, if the whole logic behind not saving bettas from Walmart is that they won't order more bettas if they have many left from the last shipment, I'd say that logic is pretty much thrown out the window by the fact that Walmart just orders more anyway and flushes what is left -_-

That's kinda what I figured happens anyway... my Walmart orders the same number of bettas every time no matter how many they have left... they probably don't even KNOW how many they have left at any given point in time.

they probably don't even KNOW how many they have left at any given point in time.
Especially with such high death rates, theres no way to keep count. It's impossible.

*sigh*

I've been ghosting this forum for ages, before I joined. That's what I do, I ghost and read FAQs and follow threads, I join reluctantly.

This particular thread (or at least, the basic idea), seems to pop up *often*, and it seems to stir up some volitile feelings each time. I'm not against that, emotions rise and fall at will --

I was just wondering, can the mods sticky this thread? I see the same results turn up each time, and maybe if we had a Walmart area, apart from this, where arguments aren't quite as recycled, where feelings can be a little more focused, where people can debate...

Oh, it was just an idea. An incomplete one. N/M.

(oops, forgot to quote) this is in response to this thread having to do directly with you....

Nope, actually it doesn't. I know, hard to believe the world doesn't revolve around you. Honestly, though, that's a hard one for me to remember too, so I can't fault you for that....:p

This thread has to do with all of the recent attention getting posts from people complaining about the way walmart treats fish, then acting like they're making a difference because they bought a fish.
Ya know, honestly the entire time I was playing volleyball I was feeling really bad because I had ripped into you without getting all of the facts and reading the entire thread. I had come back, read the entire thread, and originally was completely prepared to make ANOTHER apology directly to you, and then again make one more statement that I still support dragging sick fish home - and then hopefully bury it and it would be all dead and gone. I have since changed my mind.

I really REALLY think the comment about the world not revolving around me was COMPLETELY uncalled for. And I also think that the fact that you go around on the "FRIENDLY" fish forum calling people names and belittling people, and acting so casual about it is kinda disturbing. Your comments are usually VERY snide and you always seem to have to toss one back to everyone. I have the potential inside me to be that exact same way, and that gets turned on in a heartbeat, but ONLY when I'm dealing with people who have it coming - i.e. people who intentionally mistreat or neglect animals, etc..

To this point, I've tried to be very careful in what I say here so that I don't offend anyone on this forum because I don't want any burned bridges here. AT ALL. Mostly, because I rely on people on this forum to help get me thru the crap that my fish go through, whatever that might be. And, I'm usually very quick to make things right if something goes haywire with something.

One last thing....
I do have to say......
I highly encourage people to still take sick bettas home from WalMart if you possibly can. HOWEVER.... if you're truly going to call it a rescue, you better be making some kind of effort to make the store know that you are PISSED OFF about the way they kept their fish, because after all that is most likely the reason you took the fish home in the first place... And I'm offering to anyone who doesn't feel like causing a scene in a store, or just isn't comfortable complaining to a store, PLEASE - contact me. I can't even count the amount of times I have called stores and complain on someone else's behalf. I will even call internationally. I will do it, and I will do it well. PM or email me. PLEASE.
