Using Tree Bark As A Background

Hi all, not been on here for a while as my fish keeping took abit of a backseat. Anyway I've come across this really nice looking piece of bark from an old cut down tree. It's pretty big proberly about 4ft square now I was thinking it would make a really good background in my tank, maybe attach some moss and make a nice feature out of it. Is it possible to do so? It's been cleaned and soaked on boiling water for awhile now and I was thinking of using some concrete pond sealer to seal it.

Would it be safe to use ?

Bark will rot in water. Think about this, have you ever seen a piece of aquarium driftwood sold with bark on it?

But coated with a pond sealer that stops things from being pourus would stop that wouldn't it

It's only going to look wet as it's a clear coat and dries clear hmmm i may do a test piece and leave it to soak in a bucket for a few week see how it gets on

Hello Craig,

I suggest a chemical test before doing much else, you never know what sort of chemicals are going to leach out. Otherwise it sounds like a good idea to me.

Another way for creating a stunning background is to create a moss wall with some fine mesh graden netting double folded with the moss in the middle. I have recently done this, and early signs are that it will look stunning when the moss has fully grown through. There are lots of moss options too.... weeping, upright, christmas, star, std java etc....
