Didn't no if that was the sand on him, that's the problem you can get parasite and bacterial problems rolled into one.

Just to make sure is that sand on his body, and check the other fish in the main tank for flicking and rubbing on objects, or laboured breathing, also the plec looks sunken in can you tell me what it looks like when he goes to the toilet, is his anus red and inflamed.

Really need to get him eating to build up strength, try bloodworms or a piece of shrimp or prawn. even an algae wafer to tempt him.

I thought those long whip-like things on him could possibly be external parasites? Columnaris usually looks more like fungusy-fluff and ulcers, no? Perhaps he has gill flukes; that would explain why he's making a sad attempt to surface breath (my CAE did this when my mom left his bubbler disconnected). It would also explain the poor body condition.
Some anti bacterials can be used simultaneously with anti-parasites. I say put him in a hospital tank, treat him, and feed him a lot of high quality foods until he is feeling better.

Ok guys...I just got back. The hospital tank is set up in my kitchen with the filter and a bubble wall running. I've medicated the tank with some T.C. Capsules (Tetracycline Hydrochloride) and I'm trying to get the temp down from 80 to 75 degrees.

That is not sand on his body, I'm afraid. The other fish in the tank aren't rubbing on anything, but some of them seem to be hovering at the top. I'm not sure if this is a problem, or if I'm just being paranoid...

My poor plec...I wish I had known he was so sick before I bought him so I could have told the LPS and had them take care of him (but just now when I told them what was wrong with him they were clueless).

The LPS didn't have any Maracyn one, but I got Maracyn two... will that do me any good? Could I use it at the same time as the other? Looks like I"ll be going out to Wal Mart tonight to buy antiparasite meds...any suggestions?

Poor guy...I hope I can help him, but it sounds really bad...

If the fish are hovering at the top of the tank, sounds like a parasite, you will meed a med like i will look that up for you, don't add the maracyn two to the main tank, or in with the tetracycline.
