Triple Threat

i dont think the albinos will have a problem, unless she hatches 300 eggs each spawn. then she might. i would leave them in there spawn tanks a coouple of weeks before i moved them together thou, just to be sure they are all growing at the same rate. cause if lets say the short body plakats dont grow as fast as the others, they might get eaten. just my 2 cents.

btw, how do you check for eggs in that plastic containers. what if you miss the spawn?
You can usually see them when looking down on the nest, but the containers aren't opaque either, I'll be able to see them when looking through the sides :)

Just a thought, surely by pooling the fry from the albino's siblings, that will really decrease the chances of getting any? I would assume you are gonig to take out the albinos before you pool them, but if any get missed or the theory that you should be able to tell them apart doesn't work, you'll probably get far less.
Yeah, it might, but this is really just a test spawn to see if both of these fish carry the gene. If I get even one albino, I'll know to do the spawn over. I'm sure I'll be able to tell before they've all had a chance to die off. I really only need one albino with decent vision to breed back to one of the parents in the first place for a 50% albino spawn

The short-bodied shouldn't grow any slower, they just have a mutation for a shorter spine. The female in that spawn is from the mini line, so that might make them grow slower as her line is very slow-growing, but not all will get eaten no matter how you look at it. As long as they have plenty of food, even the runts survive without a problem. At the worst I'd just end up with fewer fry from that spawn than from the others.

very nice pairings! good luck synirr. any of them spawned yet?

I have eggies from both plakat pairs, and a ton of them!!! :kana:
So much for the theory that the short-bodied male would have trouble wrapping, haha (not that I ever believed that in the first place). I've never seen such a b*tchy betta in my life as that DT female, she destroyed the male's nest multiple times and shredded his fins, then she kept wanting to be on top when they were first trying to wrap, haha! The albino's siblings aren't doing much of anything :p

Best pic I could get of the STs wrapping, the male didn't build his nest where he was supposed to so I could get good pics

Here's a better pic of that female, the pic I posted earlier made her look retarded. She is marble also, but became more solid as she grew. She still has a little light patch on her anal fin though

Look at all the eggs from the ST plakats! :S

Lots of eggs from the DTs too!! :hey:

congrats! now for the potential parents of your albino line!

Not yet. I traded off males, but this one hasn't even made a nest yet
I'm gonna empty the tank tonight and start over with fresh water and more blackwater extract.

Synirr, what items do you use to support the bettas bubblenest?
I'm gonna try soon, but I can't decide between syrofoam/plastic cup/floating plant.

I prefer a styrofoam cup, the males seem to automatically know where to build when one is in the tank... unless they happen to be dim like my short-bodied male
