Went to LFS this afternoon and didn't buy some cherry shrimp but did hear the following conversation between a couple looking at the rays:
Her: (excited) "ooh - look at his cute smiley face"
Him: (grumpy) "its not a face. The eyes are on top"
Her: (a bit crestfallen) "yes, I know, but..." (perks up again as ray slides up the side of the tank) "ooh - but its like a smiley face, its still cute, hello"
So far, nothing odd, everyone likes the cute smiley "face" of a ray.... but then:
Her: "is that its spine?"
Him: (still grumpy) "no. it doesn't have one"
Her: "oh. do fish not have spines then?"
Him: "no. they're fish."
Her: "oh"
They moved on to the newts..... I didn't hear if they re-classified those little guys
To be fair, I'm guessing SHE meant the sting/barb, but from his response he had to have been talking about the vertebrae...
