I have yet to add any aquarium salt to my 55 gallon malawi tank. I am unsure on exactly what I should do. I have seen cichlid salt. Is that the same as aquarium salt? I do not want to add anything to make my ph any higher. Do cichlids need salt ? If so, exactly how much.

Outdoorzgirl,

You will get many opinions as to whether or not to asdd salt to a cichlid tank!! Here's mine.....

I personally do not add salts to any of my tanks!! I do not feel it's necessary for their well being.

The cichlid salts you see are different than aquarium salts. Cichlid salts have trace elements in them that are touted as being necessary to their wellfare.

I feel as long as good water changes, no carbon (it is said this removes trace elements)and a good diet are provided, salts are not necessary.

This is however just my opinion!!!!!

Thank you for your opinion. I think I will leave the salt out of my tank for now. They all seem to be doing good, so I will not fix what isn't broken.
