i didnt know were to put this
but i have noticed that and its
not only me but we ask what peoples
stats are and all we get back is oh there fine
how can we make an assumption from oh there fine
or is it these people are not testing and just
because the water looks clean and clear
that everything is OK i dont know who else
feels the same way about this

no i know what you mean biffster - when i first saw your post title, this is what came to my mind :


telling a person that their tank is really unsuitable for the fish they are keeping in it - whether wrong size (too small), wrong tankmates, wrong water stats, etc etc, and they come back with "well in my tank, they're fine"


makes me want to just drop my head down in my hands each time, that or smack the person for ignorance

Just a thought,there's no need to assume if you dont ask for stats but ask what are your nitrite etc values. Then if they havent checked them they'll tell you.

Some people like myself are colour blind and therefore cant test their own water, we can only get lfs to do it! If the only info they tell you is "yes your water is fine" what can you do? Me I ask for the results to be wrote down for me, but not all people have the confidence to ask for what they want!

I know the feeling its sometimes hard for people to realise what it is. I remember a while back we had someone whose fish were dying in a new tank and they refused to test the water at all or do a water change and they still wanted us to help them work out what they needed to do They just got really aggressive every time the question was asked I dont think it ended well...

I think its often that people dont understand how big an issue the toxins are and also people dont appreciate the life of a fish sometimes - I dont want to sound a hippy but the main aim of fish keepers is to keep the fish at least alive. And new comers, particularly young kids dont always appreciate it. An other thing people fail to realise is if the fish get a disease from a tank then it will pass onto other fish in their future I dont know what the answer will be for this really.

hey, i think it's adults just as much as kids. i find quite often that kids are a lot more willing to be helped than some adults,who always have to be right. i agree though, it is a bit annoying when people don't give details.

Not everyone who says, "they're fine" doesn't have a clue. I for example, will say they're fine as I know what they should be.

I think the prob is that most people think keeping fish is easy and pretty and that's it. They buy their tank and think they'll be able to get the fish a week after......then they come on here. It wasn't so long ago for me so believe me when I say....finding out about cycling is a real shock!

The other problem is that a lot of people don't understand it at first, I know I didn't. I remember reading a thread about fishless cycling that I was directed to and to someone completely new to it didn't explain a lot. and it was frustrating. I'm a true animal lover so once I knew about it wouldn't have dreamed of keeping fish and not doing it but I did consider taking the tank back to the shop and not bothering. So I can see why people who already have fish get angry....it's a mixture of frustration at lack of understanding and dread of the actual work involved. Almost like denial

I agree there are the very few that just don't seem to want to be told and are simply stroppy but I consider the quicker those types of people are scared off the better because they'll never make good fishkeepers. Although I hate to say it........there ARE one or two people on here who are what my dad would call "alarmists". I don't wanna be too specific but they're the ones who'll tell people they'll be overstocked when clearly they won't and tell you to do a 75% because a spec of dust fell in there. Interestingly they're also people who aren't much (if any) more experienced than the people asking the questions. So I can see why newbies might get annoyed with those people.

BUT......all the genuinely experienced people on here are fab I have to say. and I think most decent newbies realise that pretty quickly

My 55 gallon cichlid tank is cycling and I finally bought a test kit and tested the water...


Nitrites were so high my color chart didn't have the color listed.
