Tetra Tec Internal Filter

Hi everyone. Hope someone can help. Please does anyone know if you can attach the air hose from tetra tec internal 800 filter directly to an air pump or should you leave it hanging.

It will draw air in via the hose without the need for an airpump providing the hose is above the water level, if you do attach one I guess the air drawing through will be more powerful but it may negatively affect the filter as it has to work harder to push water out I'd imagine, though I have never tried to do this.
