Inchworm posted exactly what I was thinking. Variatus platy are no where near as inbred, nor as fragile, as some of the more inbred lines of guppys. A 10 gallon with a few platys & corys is a good start for a youngster.

Thanks for all the great ideas, i'm thinking a male betta is going to be the best option as by 'small tank' I was thinking 5-10g.

If he doesn't take to fishkeeping, I'll happily take the set up off him!!
