I have a strange shrimp looking bug in my 30 gallon freshwater tank that I have never seen before. I have a total of 7 fish tanks and in 20 years, have never seen an animal like this. The tail acts like a shrimp would, is about an 1/8" long and is fairly clear in color. I noticed these guys today during regular tank maintenance. I has distrubed a couple of the live plants and in doing so brought some of these guys out of the gravel. They immediately burrow back into the gravel. They also populate the filter media and as soon as exposed to light, burrow into the filter media. This tank has been in service for a little over a year and is one of my guppy breader tanks that house only those fish that I have bred. No outside plants or fish have been added. They are fed brine, and myasis shrimp. I have a hard time believing that these critters would hatch from eggs in the freeze dried food containers but have no clue where else they could have come from, nor do I have any clue as to what they are. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I captured a few and put them into a breeder trap with a couple of adult guppies and the fish go nuts trying to eat them. They either know what they are or just tast good.

I attempted to take a couple of pictures however; I cannot figure out how to post them on here.

Thanks for your help,

Doug Coffman

Here are two pictures of the silly bugs. I could not get the clarity from my camera at this close of a range. I have looked http://www.planetinverts.com/what_is_that_bug_in_my_aquarium.html however: none of these resemble what I have.

Thanks,

Doug
